Eight Dead, Investigators Say Some Had Gunshot Wounds

Eight members of a single family, including six children between the ages of 5 and 15, were found dead Friday inside a burning home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan. Ottawa County Sheriff's Capt. Jake Sparks confirmed that some of the victims had gunshot wounds, according to Times Now.

The deaths are being investigated as suspicious. Sparks said investigators are considering the possibility of a murder-suicide but explicitly cautioned that it's too early to confirm that theory, Times Now reported.

How the Morning Unfolded

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, as reported by CBS News, deputies and fire crews first responded to the area of Riverside Trail between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday after receiving calls about the smell of smoke. They searched but couldn't find a fire, and left the scene.

The New York Post, citing FOX17, reported the same early-morning response, noting firefighters were unable to locate the source of the smoke smell during that first call.

Around 11:40 to 11:42 a.m., crews returned to the 14900 block of Riverside Trail after new calls reported white smoke pouring from a window of the home. Firefighters got the blaze under control and searched the house for occupants. They found all eight family members dead inside.

The neighborhood is described by the New York Post as an affluent area of large, well-kept homes, a detail that has done nothing to explain what happened inside.

What Investigators Know, and Don't

Capt. Sparks told reporters, "We don't have cause of death at this point," according to Times Now, even while confirming that gunshot wounds were found on some of the victims. Gunshot wounds being present is not the same as gunshot wounds being confirmed as the cause of death for any specific victim, and investigators have not said how many of the eight were shot.

Authorities are also working to confirm the identities of the victims, though they believe the group is the family that lived at the residence, Times Now reported. Names have not been released as of Friday evening.

Investigators are looking at whether the fire itself was deliberately set. Sparks said that's a possibility given the circumstances but declined to draw conclusions, per Times Now. He would not say whether a weapon was recovered from the scene.

Sparks said investigators are not currently searching for a suspect outside the household, though he noted that could change as the investigation develops. The Michigan State Police arson unit is assisting Ottawa County investigators and the Grand Haven Fire Department.

What Happens Next

Autopsies will need to determine cause of death for each victim, and toxicology and ballistics work, if a weapon is eventually recovered and confirmed, will take time. Michigan State Police arson investigators still have to determine whether the fire was set intentionally or ignited some other way.

Sparks thanked the community for its support and said he was concerned for the well-being of first responders who spent much of the day at the scene, according to Times Now. The sheriff's office has not released a timeline for when victim identities or a cause of death will be made public. The investigation remains open, and Ottawa County officials say more information will follow as it becomes available.
