TSMC Stock Hits Record $2.5 Trillion Market Cap as Weak US Jobs Data Fuels Asian Tech Rally

TSMC Stock Hits Record $2.5 Trillion Market Cap as Weak US Jobs Data Fuels Asian Tech Rally
TSMC shares closed at a record NT$2,575 on October 5, pushing its market value to roughly $2.5 trillion, after a weak September US jobs report cooled Fed rate-hike expectations and sent AI chip stocks soaring across Asia. The rally comes days before TSMC reports September sales on October 8 and third-quarter earnings on October 15, with 2nm demand from Apple and Nvidia driving the bull case.

TSMC Stock Hits Record $2.5 Trillion Market Cap as Weak US Jobs Data Fuels Asian Tech Rally

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. closed at a record NT$2,575 on Monday, October 5, up 3% on the day and touching an intraday high of NT$2,580. That puts the company's market capitalization at roughly NT$66.9 trillion, or about $2.5 trillion, according to Crypto Briefing and Invezz.

TSMC wasn't alone. Taiwan's benchmark TAIEX index closed at 49,712.04, a record high, up 2.55% on volume topping NT$1.15 trillion, according to BigGo Finance. The index touched an intraday peak of 49,770.66 during the session, extending a four-session winning streak that had already pushed it past 49,000 for the first time, as reported by Sunday Guardian Live.

What actually moved the market

The direct catalyst wasn't a TSMC announcement. It was a weak US jobs report. September nonfarm payrolls rose by just 29,000, far below the 84,000 consensus, with July and August figures revised down, according to BigGo Finance. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2%. That data, released October 2, reinforced bets that the Federal Reserve won't raise rates at its October meeting, and money flooded into AI and semiconductor names across Asia.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 2.40% the same day, reclaiming the 70,000 level for the first time in three months, with chip equipment makers Advantest and Tokyo Electron posting sharp gains. The Nasdaq 100 climbed 1% to a record high on the same signal, per BigGo Finance.

Other Taiwanese names rode the wave too. MediaTek closed up 4.34% at NT$5,165. Delta Electronics surged 6.37% to NT$2,005. Hon Hai Precision Industry rose about 1.8%, according to Sunday Guardian Live.

The AI demand story underneath it

Fed expectations explain the timing. TSMC's underlying business explains why investors want in. TSMC's August revenue jumped 53% year over year, and full-year 2026 revenue growth is now guided at slightly above 40% in US dollar terms, according to Crypto Briefing.

Counterpoint Research, cited by Benzinga, puts TSMC's share of the broader "Foundry 2.0" market at about 42% in the second quarter, up from 38% in 2025, with second-half 2026 growth projected near 50%. Counterpoint Associate Director Brady Wang called TSMC the "central beneficiary" of an AI investment cycle that's now spreading to rivals like Samsung Electronics and Intel.

Reports say Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and MediaTek have raised orders for TSMC's 2-nanometer chip family by 10% to 20%, according to Invezz, which cited EDN estimates that TSMC could hit roughly 120,000 2nm wafers per month by the end of 2026, above earlier projections of 90,000 to 100,000. TSMC CEO C.C. Wei has said the supply gap is "very big." JPMorgan raised its Taiwan-listed price target to NT$3,300 from NT$3,200 on October 1, maintaining a Buy rating, per Invezz.

TSMC is set to release September sales figures on October 8, followed by third-quarter earnings before the market opens on October 15. Those are the next real data points, not forecasts.

The case for caution

The bull case isn't unanimous. TSMC's 2026 capital spending guidance sits between $60 billion and $64 billion, a bet that only pays off if AI demand stays at its current pace, as 24/7 Wall St. noted in a piece making the long case for the stock. The same analysis flagged that European auditors describe cross-strait tensions with China as a persistent source of insecurity for the entire sector, and that TSMC's 2nm ramp is expected to cut gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points through the second half of the year.

There's also customer concentration risk. A handful of large AI buyers drive an outsized share of TSMC's demand, meaning any pullback from Apple, Nvidia or AMD would hit harder than it would at a more diversified supplier. Counterpoint separately estimates TSMC's CoWoS advanced-packaging supply-demand gap at about 20% in 2026, a bottleneck the firm expects to narrow to roughly 10% in 2027 as in-house capacity expands.

None of that has stopped money from pouring in. But the next real test isn't sentiment. It's September sales on October 8 and the earnings call a week later, where TSMC will have to show the 2nm ramp and packaging buildout are keeping pace with the order book Apple and Nvidia have reportedly stacked up.

Separately, talks between TSMC and Elon Musk's Terafab over a possible manufacturing facility in Texas remain just that, talks, with no signed agreement as of this writing, according to Crypto Briefing.
