Trump Turns Cassidy's Ouster Into a Warning Shot at Massie — and Now Boebert Is in the Crosshairs Too

The Ink Wasn't Dry on Cassidy Before Trump Targeted Massie
Bill Cassidy's primary loss Saturday was barely confirmed when Trump pivoted directly to his next target: Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).
Trump took to Truth Social calling Massie a "moron," a "nut job," and "the WORST Republican Congressman" in history. The money followed swiftly.
According to the Washington Examiner, outside groups aligned with Trump have dropped more than $25 million in ads in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District boosting Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein and attacking Massie — for a House primary race.
Who Is Ed Gallrein?
Gallrein is a former Navy SEAL recruited directly by Trump to challenge Massie ahead of the May 19 primary. His pitch, according to the Los Angeles Times, is straightforward: he'll "get in line" with party leadership.
Massie, by contrast, has spent over a decade as one of Congress's most independent voices — a Tea Party libertarian who votes against deficit spending, opposed military interventions, and pushed for release of the Epstein files. He's a conservative who believes in fiscal restraint.
Massie Isn't Running Scared
Massie is not folding.
"I think that's going to help my fundraising," Massie told The Hill when asked about Trump's Truth Social attacks. He told the Washington Examiner the race would come down to turnout, and argued that younger Republicans have broken his way while older GOP voters lean toward Gallrein.
"I think it's hard to get motivated to go vote for nobody against somebody," Massie said. "Nobody really believes in my opponent."
The $25 million in outside ads suggests Trump's team isn't treating this as an easy win.
The Boebert Grenade
Then Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) posted on X supporting both Trump and Massie, writing that she has "worked with both to preserve freedom and liberty."
According to Newsweek, MAGA hardliners immediately branded the post as political suicide and called her a "RINO snake."
Trump responded Saturday evening on Truth Social — the same day Cassidy lost — threatening to pull his endorsement of Boebert and actively recruit a primary challenger against her in Colorado's 4th Congressional District.
"If the right person came along, it would be my Honor to withdraw that Endorsement," Trump wrote.
Trump isn't just targeting Massie. He's warning every Republican in Congress: endorse the wrong person and you're next.
What Mainstream Media Is Getting Wrong
Center-left outlets like Politico are framing Cassidy's ouster as a straightforward "warning sign" for Trump critics. They're ignoring a counter-signal: a sitting president spending $25 million to knock out a single House member in a safe Republican district.
The Hill reported that Trump's grip on GOP lawmakers is "beginning to show signs of strain" as Republicans increasingly break with him on legislative fights. The Massie race isn't happening in isolation.
The Scandal Angle No One Is Leading With
One thing several outlets buried: Massie is also dealing with a late-breaking personal scandal. According to the Washington Examiner, an ex-girlfriend accused Massie of offering her $5,000 to drop a workplace wrongful termination complaint in the final days of the race.
Massie has denied the substance of the claim. The timing — right before a $25 million-funded primary — coincides with opposition research drops that typically occur before votes.
What This Actually Means
This race is a referendum on one question: Can a Republican congressman vote his conscience and survive?
Massie voted against Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" over deficit concerns. He pushed for the Epstein files. He opposed blank-check military spending. Those aren't liberal positions — they're the positions Trump himself ran on in 2016.
May 19. Kentucky. The results will speak for themselves.
