Trump Threatens to Primary Boebert After She Campaigns for Massie in Kentucky

Trump Goes Public — Against His Own Ally
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on May 16, 2026, asking if anyone wanted to run against Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) in Colorado's 4th Congressional District.
"Is anyone interested in running against Weak Minded Lauren Boebert?" Trump wrote. "Just let me know, or announce your Candidacy, and I will be there for you!"
Trump was publicly recruiting a primary challenger against a member of his own party who, until recently, was one of his loudest supporters.
What Boebert Actually Did
Boebert flew to Kentucky on May 16 and appeared at two campaign events for Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who faces a Trump-endorsed primary challenger — retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein — in the May 19 Republican primary.
She wasn't hiding it. She wasn't apologizing for it.
"I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie," Boebert posted on X the same day. "I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA. Onward."
There was no walking it back.
Who Is Thomas Massie and Why Does Trump Hate Him?
Massie is no moderate. He's a libertarian-leaning conservative who has repeatedly gone off-script from Trump's agenda.
According to Reuters, Massie voted against Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" — Trump's signature legislative package. He's also publicly criticized Trump's foreign policy in Iran and Venezuela.
But the most explosive move? Massie publicly accused Trump of being part of the "Epstein class." In February, Massie told ABC's This Week: "He's still in with the Epstein class. This is the Epstein administration."
Trump called Massie "the Worst Republican Congressman in the History of our Country." The two have deep disagreements.
The Carpetbagger Attack
Trump didn't just go after Boebert's judgment. He went after her character.
He called her a "Carpetbagger" — referencing the fact that Boebert moved from Colorado's 3rd Congressional District to the more conservative 4th District ahead of the 2024 election after facing difficult reelection odds in the 3rd.
It's a legitimate political point. She did move. But Trump endorsed her after that move, calling her a "Proven Conservative" who delivers for the America First agenda, according to the Washington Examiner. He cannot now claim the move was disqualifying after he blessed it.
Boebert and Massie Had Real Grievances Before This
This didn't come out of nowhere. According to the NY Post, Boebert clashed with Trump on two specific issues:
1. She backed Massie's bill to release the Epstein files.
2. She publicly criticized Trump after he vetoed legislation in December 2025 that would have funded a drinking water project for Southern Colorado — her constituents.
She had actual policy differences with Trump over how to represent her district.
What the Mainstream Coverage Is Getting Wrong
Most outlets — including Reuters via USA Today and Yahoo News — are framing this as a loyalty test for Trump's hold on the GOP. That's one angle.
But there's another dimension: Trump is targeting members who represent their constituents over his preferences. Boebert voted for the drinking water project. Her district needed it. Trump vetoed it. She said so publicly.
Also largely missing from mainstream coverage: Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) also appeared at the Massie campaign event, according to the Washington Examiner. Trump has NOT threatened to primary Rand Paul. The difference may be that Paul is a senator and a harder target.
The Gallrein Numbers
As of May 18, Gallrein held a 5-percentage-point lead over Massie, according to a Quantis Insights poll of 908 likely GOP voters, per the Washington Examiner. The May 19 primary will reveal whether Trump's endorsement still carries weight in a congressional district he doesn't directly control.
What This Means for Regular People
If you're a Republican voter, here's the question: do you want a party where members can't represent their own districts without threats from the president?
Boebert's constituents needed drinking water infrastructure. She fought for it. Trump killed it, then threatened to primary her when she didn't applaud.
Massie's constituents elected him to be a check on government overreach. He's been that, aggressively.
Elected representatives answer to voters, not to presidents. When that line blurs, everyone loses — Republicans included.
The Massie primary result on May 19 is the first real data point.
