Trump Says Iran's Khamenei 'Not Dead' But 'Very Seriously Wounded,' as Tehran Feels Blockade Squeeze

President Donald Trump says he doesn't believe Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is dead. He also says the man is barely functional.

"I don't think he's dead. He was very seriously wounded. The left side of his body, the arm, the leg, the whole thing," Trump told radio host Glenn Beck, according to Israel National News and the Hindustan Times. "But I don't think he's dead."

This is the most specific public account Trump has offered of Khamenei's condition since the Iranian leader took over on February 28, 2026, after his father, longtime Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in US-Israeli strikes that launched Operation Epic Fury. Trump has floated numbers before. He's called the younger Khamenei "90% gone" and "damaged," language Crypto Briefing noted has grown steadily more vivid over six months without ever being confirmed.

Six months in, nobody outside Iran's inner circle has seen Mojtaba Khamenei. No video. No audio. No public appearance, not even at his own father's funeral. His only communications with the Iranian public have come through written statements attributed to him by state media, according to Breitbart.

What Iranian Officials Are Reportedly Saying

IranWire, an opposition outlet, reported this month that it spoke with two sources close to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's government. One source said Khamenei's physical condition is poor and hasn't improved.

"We would not be surprised if we heard news of his martyrdom soon," that source said, according to Breitbart's reporting on the IranWire account.

The same sources said Khamenei hasn't met with any member of Pezeshkian's cabinet since the February 28 strikes. None of this has been independently verified, and Iranian authorities have made no announcement that their Supreme Leader is critically ill.

Pezeshkian himself, in an interview aired on Iranian state television, acknowledged that communicating with Khamenei is currently "very difficult" but said his "presence is a very great source of strength for us so that we can continue." That's the closest thing to an official Iranian statement on the matter, and it doesn't resolve anything either way.

The Tehran Municipality-affiliated newspaper Al-Mashhari offered an explanation for why not even Khamenei's voice has surfaced: officials are reportedly withholding audio out of concern that foreign intelligence agencies could extract acoustic signatures, background noise, or other clues about his location from a recording.

Trump himself, in earlier remarks reported by Crypto Briefing, said, "We don't know if he's dead or not, nobody has seen him, which is unusual." That's a direct admission that even the US doesn't have confirmed intelligence on Khamenei's status. Everything since then, from "90% gone" to the specific description of a wounded arm and leg, is coming from a president with every incentive to project Iranian leadership as being in disarray, whether or not that's precisely what US intelligence has verified.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's description was more restrained: wounded and likely disfigured. Iranian officials have pushed back on claims about the severity of Khamenei's condition, though they haven't produced him to settle the question either. Both silence and denial are consistent with several different realities: he's incapacitated, he's dead and Iran is manufacturing continuity, or he's alive and deliberately staying out of sight for security reasons given that the strike that killed his father demonstrated US-Israeli intelligence could locate senior regime figures.

The Economic Pressure Campaign

While Khamenei's status remains unresolved, Trump has shifted his public messaging toward economic strangulation rather than new strikes. "We are low keying it," Trump told Axios in comments reported by Fox News and the Epoch Times. "We are only semi-negotiating with them. We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money."

The numbers support part of that claim. Iranian state media outlet IRNA reported the country lost roughly 230 million cubic meters per day of natural gas production capacity since the war began, according to CNN. Two major petrochemical facilities in southwest Iran, Arvand Petrochemical and Ghadir Petrochemical, suspended production this month amid a heatwave and power shortages, CNN reported, citing Iranian outlets Petrochemiha and Rajanews.

US Central Command said it redirected 53 commercial ships headed to or from Iran over a recent weekend, disabling two and boarding two more, as part of the ongoing naval blockade, according to the Epoch Times. Oil prices have fallen from a July 23 high of roughly $92 a barrel for US crude to about $78-79 by early August, per Epoch Times and Fox News reporting, as Iran and Oman discuss a framework to reopen shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says that deal is in its "final stages" but has repeated that the strait won't fully reopen until the US meets other conditions, including lifting sanctions and ending military activity against Iran's regional allies, according to Reuters as cited by Fox News. The two governments are not in direct talks, Araghchi said; messages are moving through intermediaries.

Fox News host Johnny "Joey" Jones warned that any Iran off-ramp without a confirmed nuclear deal could hang over Trump's legacy and the GOP's midterm prospects. Whether Trump gets that deal, and whether Khamenei is ever produced alive to negotiate it, remain open questions.
