Trenton, New Jersey Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 9 Injured After Gunfire Erupts at Overnight Cookout

Eleven people were shot before dawn Sunday in Trenton, New Jersey, at a neighborhood gathering that turned into a crime scene in seconds.

Trenton police told CBS News Philadelphia the shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. on the 100 block of Locust Street. Two people died. Nine others were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, according to Fox 29 Philadelphia, which cited Trenton police as its source.

Family and friends who spoke to NBC10 Philadelphia said the gathering started as a neighborhood cookout. At some point, gunfire broke out. Investigators were seen placing nearly 40 evidence markers along the ground at the scene, according to NBC10, which gives a sense of how much shooting happened in a short stretch of street.

Trenton Police Captain David Ordille confirmed the death and injury count to NBC10. Nj.com reported that a Trenton police spokesman referred all further questions to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, which had not provided additional details as of Sunday morning.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force is running the investigation, according to CBS News Philadelphia and Newsweek. No arrests have been announced. No motive has been released. Police have not said whether they're looking for one shooter or several.

Outside Capital Health Regional Medical Center, a vehicle with visible damage was towed away from the emergency room entrance, NBC10 and Newsweek both reported. Police had taped off an entrance to the hospital, roughly two miles from the shooting scene. NBC10 reporter Katy Zachry spoke with a woman outside the hospital who said her nephew had been shot in the head and brought there for treatment. His condition wasn't disclosed.
