Spotify Will Tag AI-Generated Artist Profiles and Cut Them From Recommendations Starting Mid-September

Spotify is done pretending every artist on the platform is human, whether the account says so or not.

Starting today, artists can self-disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile is an "AI Persona," according to Spotify's official announcement. Beginning in mid-September, Spotify will also apply its own "AI Persona" or "Likely AI Persona" badges to profiles it determines represent "photorealistic AI-generated identities" rather than real people, based on a mix of human review and AI detection tools, the company said.

Once tagged, that artist's music gets cut out of Spotify's editorial picks and personalized recommendations by default. You'd only hear it if you specifically follow that AI account, according to reporting from TechCrunch and Spotify's own newsroom post.

The badge shows up in the artist's profile banner, the About section, Search results, and track rows across playlists once the rollout hits mobile in mid-September. Spotify says it's starting with the profiles that clear "defined audience thresholds," meaning the most-listened-to accounts get reviewed first, per Music Business Worldwide.

What this actually labels

This badge flags whether the artist is real, not whether the song used AI. Spotify made that distinction explicit. "Although there's a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination," the company said. "This badge is about the artist's public identity, not about how the music was made."

That's a narrower move than what Deezer is doing. CNET and TechRadar both note that Deezer already labels AI-generated tracks, not just fake artist identities, and recently disclosed that AI-generated songs now account for roughly half of its daily uploads. Spotify currently has no equivalent system for flagging AI-made music itself, only AI-made artists.

Artists tagged incorrectly get notified and can appeal, according to Engadget and Spotify's announcement. In the coming months, ordinary listeners will also get the ability to flag suspected AI profiles for review, though Spotify hasn't detailed how that reporting tool will work yet.

Industry pressure building

This isn't happening in isolation. Music Business Worldwide reports that in July, the RIAA and IFPI proposed voluntary "AI-generated" and "AI-assisted" tags for services like Spotify and Apple Music. Days later, a coalition including Believe, BMG, Concord and HYBE proposed barring AI-made recordings from official charts unless they're "substantially human-made" and free of stream manipulation. IFPI says it's already applying those chart principles across more than 20 charts worldwide, including Germany's Offizielle Deutsche Charts and Australia's ARIA Charts.

On top of that, the EU's AI Act content-labeling rules took effect August 2, requiring anyone deploying an AI system to label deepfakes, including AI vocals built to mimic a real artist's voice, Music Business Worldwide reported. Spotify's timing lines up with regulators, industry groups, and a competitor all moving on the same problem at once.

The legitimate skepticism

Tiffany Naiman, director of Music Industry Programs at UCLA, told the Los Angeles Times this is a step in the right direction but flagged the risk of enforcement. "I want to know the process. How [will they] know the difference? Are there going to be [real] artists that get tied up in it?" Naiman said. "It feels very 'Blade Runner,' right? Like you're human, you're not human."

Spotify is asking listeners to trust a detection system it hasn't fully explained, run by human reviewers and unspecified AI tools, to sort real musicians from synthetic ones at scale. A real artist wrongly tagged loses recommendation traffic, which on a platform where discovery drives revenue is not a small penalty. Spotify's appeals process is the only stated safeguard against that outcome, and its effectiveness hasn't been tested yet because the badges haven't gone live.

Spotify is also not walking away from AI. The company struck a licensing deal with Merlin last week to bring AI tools to artists across more than 30,000 labels and distributors, the Los Angeles Times reported. It's building AI Remixes, AI DJ, and Prompted Playlists into the app. The company is simultaneously fighting AI slop and selling AI features. Whether the AI Persona badge meaningfully slows the flood of synthetic artists, or just labels a fraction of them while Spotify keeps expanding AI tools elsewhere, will depend on how aggressively the review team tags profiles once the badges go live in mid-September.
