SpaceX Insider Lockup Starts Lifting Aug. 6, Freeing Up to $116 Billion in Stock

SpaceX Insider Lockup Starts Lifting Aug. 6, Freeing Up to $116 Billion in Stock
SpaceX's post-IPO lockup begins expiring August 6, two days after its first quarterly earnings report as a public company, making up to 911.5 million insider shares eligible for sale. The stock, trading under ticker SPCX, jumped 7.32% Tuesday to $128.62 but remains down more than 43% from its 52-week high of $225.64.

SpaceX's stock lockup starts expiring on August 6, opening the door for insiders to sell up to $116 billion worth of shares. That's according to a report cited by KuCoin, sourced to BlockBeats and ME News.

The lockup covers as many as 911.5 million shares. It lifts in stages starting two days after SpaceX reports its first quarterly earnings as a public company, with earnings scheduled for August 4 after market close, according to Finviz data.

According to the KuCoin report, this is the largest stock lockup expiration in capital market history. Additional tranches of insider shares are set to become tradable before the end of 2026, the report says.

The Stock's Rough Ride So Far

SpaceX, trading as SPCX, went public with an IPO on June 12, 2026, according to Finviz. It's been a bumpy few weeks since.

The stock hit a 52-week high of $225.64 and has since fallen to a low of $119.68. As of Tuesday's session, shares traded at $128.62, up $8.77 or 7.32% on the day, according to Finviz data pulled at 1:10 PM ET. That bounce snapped what MarketWatch described as a "brutal losing streak."

The numbers show just how brutal. SPCX is down 30.47% over the past month and down 14.25% year-to-date. It's down 16.97% from both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, according to Finviz, an odd overlap that reflects how short and volatile the stock's trading history has been since a mid-June IPO.

Insider ownership sits at 95.13%, per Finviz. Almost the entire company is still held by insiders, which explains why an $116 billion lockup expiration matters for anyone watching this stock.

Short interest is running at 17.23% of the float, with a short ratio of 0.84, according to Finviz. The float itself is tiny relative to shares outstanding: just 646 million shares floating versus 7.38 billion shares outstanding total. That mismatch is a big reason the stock swings so hard on relatively modest trading volume.

Wall Street Is Overwhelmingly Bullish, With One Outlier

Wall Street has piled in with price targets since SPCX started trading. On July 7, a wave of banks initiated coverage: Raymond James came in with a Strong Buy and an eye-popping $800 price target, according to Finviz. Morgan Stanley set $300 with an Overweight rating. Deutsche Bank came in at $255 with a Buy.

Other July 7 initiations included Cantor Fitzgerald and Canaccord Genuity, both at $246, RBC Capital Markets at $225, JPMorgan at $225, Goldman Sachs at $205, and Citigroup at $200. Not everyone is as excited. MoffettNathanson initiated coverage on July 7 with a Neutral rating and a $131 target, essentially where the stock trades right now. Piper Sandler followed on July 16 with a Neutral rating and a $156 target.

The average analyst recommendation sits at 1.61 on Finviz's scale, where 1 is Strong Buy, putting SPCX firmly in bullish territory overall. The average price target of $240.65 implies analysts see nearly double the current share price as fair value, though that average is skewed upward by Raymond James's outlier $800 call.

What This Means For Investors

A lockup expiration doesn't force anyone to sell. It just removes the legal restriction that's kept insiders from cashing out since the IPO. Whether SpaceX employees, early investors, or Elon Musk himself choose to sell shares starting August 6 is a separate question from whether they're allowed to.

But markets tend to price in the risk of a supply flood before it happens. With 95.13% insider ownership and a float of just 646 million shares against 7.38 billion shares outstanding, even a modest percentage of insiders deciding to sell could dramatically increase the number of shares actually trading hands.\
