ProPublica: Putin-Linked Oligarch Paid Hundreds of Thousands for Don Jr.'s Wedding Island and Fireworks

Donald Trump Jr. married Bettina Anderson in a small ceremony in West Palm Beach, Florida, in May, followed by a larger celebration on a private island in the Bahamas. Since ProPublica's Monday, September 14 report on who actually paid for that island celebration, the story has become a flashpoint in Washington.

ProPublica, citing records and three people familiar with the event, reported that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev covered a significant chunk of the Bahamas festivities. Kremlev rented the private island at a reported $100,000 per night, put up an estimated $70,000 for a fireworks display, and had his team help plan parts of the event, according to the outlet. The payments reportedly ran through a Dubai-based entity that Kremlev's organization, the International Boxing Association, uses for financial transactions.

Kremlev is president of the IBA, which ProPublica reports is financed by Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy giant. He's also been positioned by Putin as a central figure in Russia's sports-betting industry, was handed control of a company running the national lottery, and became owner of Russia's largest car dealership network after Putin nationalized it in 2023, according to ProPublica. He's also tied to a group called Healthy Fatherland that Ukraine has sanctioned over allegations it relocated Ukrainian children.

A former IBA board member told ProPublica that Kremlev answers to Putin and used boxing as a vehicle for soft political power. Frank Montoya Jr., a retired FBI official who held senior counterintelligence roles, told the outlet the arrangement "reeked of quid pro quo," arguing that someone who pays for your wedding eventually expects something back. No charges or formal probe have been announced by any agency.

Bettina Trump pushed back publicly, writing on social media that "our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding," calling it "an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful." The couple says this was arranged after their actual legal marriage in Florida. Kremlev attended the celebration. ProPublica notes none of the family's published photos show him clearly, though the top of his head appears in a group photo posted by a friend of the bride. President Trump did not attend.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, was also at the wedding. Kushner has held a lead role in negotiating a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which raises the obvious question of proximity between a Kremlin-linked financier and someone shaping U.S. Russia policy. No source has established that Kushner had any knowledge of who funded the event or any interaction with Kremlev tied to policy.

Reaction on Capitol Hill was fast. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told MeidasTouch's Pablo Manríquez on Monday that "these guys are in the pocket of everyone but the American people," calling the arrangement "profoundly disturbing" and saying the administration is "selling out every single person in this country for a buck." Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, posted on X asking why a Russian oligarch close to Putin funded the wedding and "what did he get in return," calling for answers.

No congressional committee has opened a formal inquiry, no subpoenas have been issued, and no federal agency has announced a review of the payments. Whether a private wedding gift between friends, even an extravagant one from a Kremlin-connected billionaire, constitutes anything more than a family embarrassment is a question Garcia and other Oversight Democrats will have to pursue through committee action, not social media posts, if they want a real answer.

ProPublica's reporting establishes the money trail and Kremlev's Kremlin ties, but not why he chose to pay for Don Jr.'s wedding specifically or whether that gift bought him anything at all. Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have not addressed that question directly beyond calling it a gift from a friend.
