One Dead, 207 Sick in UK Salmonella Outbreak Health Officials Link to Imported Eggs

One person is dead and 207 people across the UK have been sickened in a salmonella outbreak that health officials say may be tied to eggs brought in from outside the country.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says the cases span nearly a full year, from August 11, 2025, to August 1, 2026. England accounts for 199 of them, with six in Scotland, one in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland, according to UKHSA data reported by The Independent, the Mirror, and Yorkshire Live.

Thirty-eight percent of those infected needed hospital treatment. Two people developed bloodstream infections serious enough to be life-threatening. The people who got sick ranged from infants to a 90-year-old, per UKHSA's own figures.

London had the most cases in England, 47, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber with 38. This is Sky News reporting, carried by This Is The Coast, which also notes UKHSA believes this outbreak connects back to a separate wave of imported-egg-linked salmonella cases from 2025.

Hannah Charles, UKHSA's lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections, said her agency is working with the Food Standards Agency and other public health bodies to nail down the source. She was careful with her language: the eggs "may be linked," not confirmed as the cause. Nobody has publicly identified a specific supplier, country of origin, or product recall tied to this UK outbreak, unlike a separate situation in the United States.

In late July 2026, the CDC confirmed a domestic outbreak of 98 salmonella cases across 17 states, tied to eggs from Midwest Poultry Services' Texas farms, according to the Epoch Times. Seventy-three of those cases hit Texas alone. The FDA said lab sequencing matched samples from the company's farms to the outbreak strain, and the eggs were pulled from Kroger and Brookshire Grocery shelves across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and New Mexico.

That's a US recall with an identified company and a confirmed pathogen match. The UK outbreak, as of today, has no named supplier and no confirmed source. UKHSA has only floated eggs "imported from outside of the UK" as a possible link, and officials are still investigating.

The outbreak also isn't happening in isolation. This Is The Coast notes UKHSA data showing English salmonella cases hit a decade high in 2025, climbing from 10,389 confirmed cases in 2024 to 10,406 in 2025. UKHSA itself said in May that the increase, while real, "remains broadly comparable" to the prior year, not a dramatic spike.

The Independent floated one possible explanation from outside government: Dr. Kimon Andreas Karatzas, a food microbiology professor at Reading University, told the outlet the cost-of-living crisis could be pushing more people to cook at home, which raises the odds of cross-contamination if kitchen hygiene slips. That's his theory, not a UKHSA finding, and it should be treated as one expert's hypothesis rather than an established cause.

UKHSA's public health guidance hasn't changed: wash your hands before handling food, cook eggs and other food thoroughly, and stay away from preparing food for others if you're symptomatic. Charles said people worried about symptoms, which include diarrhea, cramps, fever, and vomiting, should contact their GP or an out-of-hours service rather than showing up untreated.

The basic question at the center of the outbreak remains unresolved: which country, which supplier, and which specific batch of eggs actually caused it. UKHSA and the Food Standards Agency say that investigation is ongoing, and no product recall notice tied to this specific UK outbreak has been issued as of today, August 18, 2026.
