Northern Spotted Owl Now Functionally Extinct Across Much of the Pacific Northwest, Oregon State Study Finds

The northern spotted owl, the small forest bird that shut down logging on millions of acres of federal land in the early 1990s, has crossed a significant threshold. A new study from Oregon State University, published in the journal Ecological Applications, found that populations across large swaths of the Pacific Northwest are functionally extinct or close to it.

The removal program, and its critics

Vitek Jirinec of the Integral Ecology Research Center, who worked on the GPS tracking study, argues sustained removal gives the spotted owl a real shot at recovery.
Critics, including some wildlife advocates, have raised concerns about a federal strategy that involves deliberately killing thousands of one owl species to protect another, arguing it treats a symptom of ecosystem imbalance rather than a root cause and that lethal control programs are expensive and open-ended by design. Forest Service researchers counter that with barred owls now saturating the landscape, habitat protection alone can no longer reverse the decline, making removal the only tool left with any track record of results.
No federal decision has been announced to expand the removal program beyond its current scope in California.
