About 120 people attended, roughly half of them kids, according to Ars Technica's review of the report.

Of the 48 infected, 33 were treated by their regular doctor and 15 went to hospital emergency departments, RTÉ and the Irish Times both reported. Four children were admitted to hospital, with an average stay of four days. All recovered. No adults were identified as cases, according to ireland-live.ie.

Health officials didn't learn about the outbreak until nine days after the event, when a 12-year-old boy was hospitalized with MRSA folliculitis, an infection of the hair follicles that produces pus-filled bumps. By the time doctors traced his case back to the gathering, 25 other kids had already turned up with unusual skin infections, according to RTÉ.

Genomic sequencing identified the culprit as a rare strain called t016-ST22-MRSA-IV, capable of producing a toxin called Panton-Valentine leukocidin, or PVL, which destroys immune cells and drives the kind of aggressive, necrotic skin lesions seen in these kids, Ars Technica reported. The strain resisted four common antibiotics: flucloxacillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim. It remained treatable with clindamycin, tetracycline, fusidic acid, co-trimoxazole, and linezolid.

Most kids developed symptoms within two to four days, faster than the typical incubation window, with legs and thighs the most commonly affected areas, consistent with skin contact on bouncy castle surfaces. Twelve reported systemic symptoms like fever, nausea, or vomiting.

Conditions were tailor-made for spread

Parents told investigators the weather that day was humid, warm, and showery, and kids were noticeably wet while playing, according to ireland-live.ie. Nineteen of the 48 infected kids had spent at least four hours on the inflatables, and play was described as rough-and-tumble, the kind that produces the small scrapes and abrasions bacteria need to get past skin.

Forty-seven of the 48 infected children had played on the castles. The one who hadn't had close contact with an infected child shortly after, according to NewsBeep's summary of the findings.

Officials involved the National MRSA Reference Laboratory and Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin, and declared the outbreak over 40 days after the event once two full incubation periods passed without a new case, RTÉ reported.

What nobody actually tested

Health officials never swabbed the bouncy castles themselves, according to NewsBeep. They reasoned that a positive swab wouldn't prove the castles caused the outbreak anyway, and by the time castles became suspects, they doubted the bacteria would still be detectable on the surfaces.
