Morgan Stanley's Top Stock Picks Beat the S&P 500 by 13 Points, New 2027 List Announced

Morgan Stanley just handed investors its annual list of stocks it thinks will outperform over the next 12 months. The last one worked. The bank's Vintage Values 2026 portfolio returned 32.12% between September 9, 2025 and September 11, 2026, beating the S&P 500's 18.96% gain by 1,316 basis points, according to CNBC.
The refresh was reported Monday by CNBC, TradingView and BigGo Finance.
What Changed
Only three names survived the cut from 2026 to 2027: Amazon, McKesson and Visa. Twelve of the fifteen slots turned over completely.
The new additions include Alphabet, Apple, Coca-Cola, Dynatrace, Eli Lilly, Equinix, Honeywell Aerospace, Keysight Technologies, Liberty Formula One, LPL Financial, TransUnion and Williams Companies, according to TradingView and BigGo Finance. The mix includes Big Tech, pharma, consumer staples and industrial infrastructure.
How the List Gets Built
Morgan Stanley's process isn't a committee picking favorites off a hunch. Equity strategist Michelle Weaver's team asked North America analysts to submit their single highest-conviction stock for a one-year buy-and-hold horizon. More than 50 names came in. The firm narrowed that pool to 15 using quantitative screens, company fundamentals, macro exposure, sector positioning, valuation and risk-reward analysis, according to CNBC.
Weaver was blunt about what the list is not. "Vintage Values 2027 has an 'anti-momentum' tilt, the stocks on the list are not simply stocks that have worked recently but rather ones our analysts have identified for their strong bottom-up drivers," she wrote in a note cited by CNBC and TradingView.
Chasing whatever ran hot the prior twelve months is how retail investors get burned buying tops. Picking companies for actual balance-sheet and earnings reasons is a different discipline entirely.
The tradeoff: this portfolio isn't cheap. About 60% of the 2027 selections sit in the top two quality tiers, versus 56% for the S&P 500 itself, according to CNBC. The list trades at a valuation premium to the broader market on most metrics. You're paying up for quality, not bargain-hunting.
The Market Backdrop
The list landed on a day when its own logic got a live test. Communication Services was the best-performing S&P sector Monday, and Alphabet, a member of that sector, was one of the fresh additions to Vintage Values, according to Traders Agency, which cited Reuters reporting that AI optimism and retreating Treasury yields drove the broader rally. Alphabet shares rose 2% Monday, Coca-Cola fell 1%, and Apple added 0.8%, according to TradingView and StockTwits.
Traders Agency was careful to note the obvious: a single institutional pick landing on a strong sector day doesn't mean the pick caused the rally. Communication Services and Technology led because of the broader AI trade, not because Morgan Stanley put a stamp on Alphabet.
MarketWatch reported that while equity investors are celebrating booming chip and server demand, credit markets are flagging riskier debt contracts and rising borrowing costs tied to the buildout, according to Traders Agency's summary of that reporting. If the AI infrastructure boom is being financed with debt that credit markets are already pricing as risky, a correction in financing costs could hit the sector even while the earnings story looks fine on the surface. Nothing in these reports suggests that's happening yet. It's a warning sign, not a verdict.
Elsewhere Monday, Bitcoin climbed to its highest level since late January and Ethereum moved higher alongside it, according to CNBC. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan told the network he believes the "crypto winter" is over, pointing to rising blockchain transaction volume and involvement from firms like BlackRock as evidence of improving fundamentals even during prior price declines. That's Hougan's read, not an independently verified fact, and crypto sentiment calls have been wrong before.
What's Next
Morgan Stanley's list is a one-year bet, meaning the real scorecard doesn't arrive until September 2027. Investors chasing the 2026 list's 32% return should remember past performance from one twelve-month stretch doesn't guarantee the next one repeats, especially on a portfolio now carrying a bigger valuation premium than the index it's trying to beat.
