Melania Trump-Mediated Ceasefire Takes Effect in Oleshky as Russian Missiles Hit Kyiv Minutes Later

Melania Trump-Mediated Ceasefire Takes Effect in Oleshky as Russian Missiles Hit Kyiv Minutes Later
A localized pause in fighting in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky began at 3 a.m. Kyiv time Tuesday, Oct. 27, with both militaries confirming it. Aid is scheduled to enter the town Thursday, Oct. 29, for as many as 2,000 stranded residents. Russian missiles hit Kyiv minutes after the truce started, and neither side has said how long it will last.

A humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine's Kherson region, took effect at 3 a.m. Kyiv time Tuesday, Oct. 27. First lady Melania Trump served as what her office calls the "Exclusive Intermediary" in the deal.

Both militaries confirmed the start. Russia's Defense Ministry said on Telegram that it stopped shelling in the direction of Oleshky at the same hour. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's parliament commissioner for human rights, announced the start on X.

Lubinets described it as part of a humanitarian mission "carried out with the mediation and coordination of US First Lady Melania Trump," in cooperation with Yana Lantratova, Russia's human rights commissioner.

Who is stuck in Oleshky

Oleshky sits across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson. About 24,000 people lived there before the war. The White House puts the population today at 1,700 to 2,000, mostly elderly, plus roughly 50 children. No formal count has been done since 2022.

The United Nations says the remaining residents have dwindling food and medicine. It says explosive mines and drone attacks keep them from leaving. About 90% of the town's territory flooded in 2023 after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed.

The first lady said in a statement that Oleshky is "on the brink of disaster" and that the residents have "limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks."

The plan

Aid is scheduled to begin entering the city Thursday, Oct. 29. Her office says the shipments will include medicine, food, clean water and medical personnel.

Non-military civilian officials from both countries are to visit residents at home and assess what each needs. Residents who want to leave are to get transportation to the destination they choose. Melania Trump said she expects "some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine."

Her statement also says she arranged for an "impartial American media organization" to document the work. Newsmax has said it received exclusive television access to accompany observers into the city Thursday.

The White House's original announcement had given Oct. 29 as the start date for the ceasefire itself. Both militaries put the start at Tuesday. Neither has said when the pause ends.

Who gets the credit

Marc Beckman, the first lady's senior adviser, said on Fox News that she "single-handedly brokered" the deal. He said Russia has since agreed to extend the planned pause by two days and widen it to a larger area of Kherson. No Russian or Ukrainian official quoted so far has confirmed that extension.

Others describe a wider effort. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Kyiv had been working on this deal "for some time." Davyd Arakhamia, a Ukrainian lawmaker on the negotiating team, said Kyiv and Washington discussed Oleshky in talks in Oslo last Tuesday and that there should be "good news next week."

Pope Leo raised Oleshky with Vladimir Putin in an Oct. 16 phone call, according to the Vatican. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov credited the first lady with a "significant contribution."

President Trump said Friday that "they contacted both sides, and both sides wanted to do it." Asked whether his wife should join the expected three-way peace talks, he said, "No, but it's not the worst idea I've ever heard."

The first lady's office says she learned of Oleshky's conditions at her Fostering the Future Together event during the U.N. General Assembly in September. It says she then used the channel built through six exchanges that have returned 34 Ukrainian children to their families since August 2025. Her office says both countries assigned teams to coordinate the work, including demining.

Kyiv under fire

The truce is local. The war around it is not.

Minutes after 3 a.m., ballistic missile explosions shook Kyiv. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a strike hit the Southern Bridge over the Dnipro and damaged metro infrastructure on it. City officials said train service across the bridge was suspended.

Late Monday, Russian missiles damaged the grounds of a Kyiv university, killing one person and injuring 10, city officials said. Klitschko said a blast wave shattered windows in an intensive care unit.

The larger picture

The ceasefire comes as the Trump administration presses Zelenskyy to reach a deal with Putin. Ukraine has complained of gaps in U.S. intelligence sharing and a slowdown in Starlink service. Earlier this month, Trump eased some sanctions to let Russia supply diesel to global markets, a move that alarmed officials in Ukraine and Europe. Russian diesel is expected to arrive Nov. 7 under a Trump-Putin arrangement.

Russia has also agreed to resume three-way talks with the U.S. and Ukraine, with a new round expected next month.

The immediate test comes Thursday, Oct. 29, when the first aid convoy and observers are due to enter Oleshky. Whether the pause lasts long enough to evacuate everyone who wants to leave is still open, because neither Moscow nor Kyiv has put an end date on it.
