Labor Day Weekend 2026: Oregon Beach Warning Over Fecal Bacteria as Florida Counties Adjust Beach Access

Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, Sept. 7, capping a three-day weekend that runs from Saturday, Sept. 5 through Monday, according to marconews.com. It's the unofficial end of summer, and it's also peak hurricane season in Florida, with marconews noting there's "plenty of unknowns as of Sept. 3" on when the next tropical system might form.

On the West Coast, the holiday comes with a public health warning. The Oregon Health Authority issued an advisory Wednesday, Sept. 2, for Oceanside Beach in Tillamook County, telling visitors to avoid direct contact with the water because of unsafe fecal bacteria levels, according to the New York Post. Exposure can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, skin rashes and upper respiratory infections, per the agency's advisory. Kids, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system face extra risk, and the OHA is also telling people to steer clear of nearby creeks, standing pools of water and runoff flowing into the ocean, since those tend to carry even higher bacteria concentrations.

Beach bacteria advisories are common in coastal states and typically get lifted once follow-up water testing comes back clean. No source indicates when the OHA expects that to happen, so anyone planning a trip to Oceanside Beach this weekend should check the agency's site before wading in.

Florida's crowd management

Down in Florida, the concern isn't water quality, it's foot traffic. Volusia County and the Volusia Sheriff's Office are temporarily closing about 125 on-beach parking spaces across five beachfront parks from Saturday through Monday, according to WFTV. Vehicles can still drive through those areas, just not park there. The county says the move affects less than 3% of its more than 5,000 total beach parking spaces and is meant to cut down on car-pedestrian conflicts during the holiday crush. The Seabreeze Boulevard beach ramp also remains closed, unrelated to the holiday, because of structural concerns with a nearby building.

Over in Manatee County, officials are adding capacity rather than cutting it. The Gulf Islands Ferry added a third stop at Coquina Beach ahead of the holiday weekend, according to the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The service now runs three vessels connecting downtown Bradenton to Anna Maria Island via the Manatee River. Round-trip fares run $9 for adults and $7 for seniors, military and children, with free rides for kids under 4 and seniors 80 and older. County Commission Chair Tal Siddique said the expansion builds on a program that already pulled nearly 23,000 cars off the road last year, with more than 55,000 passengers riding the ferry in 2025. The service is funded through the Tourist Development Tax, meaning visitors, not local property owners, are covering the cost.

Where to actually go

For travelers looking to dodge the crowds entirely, Fox News published a roundup of quieter Florida alternatives to the usual tourist magnets, a list that also ran in Jingle Tree and on WFMD. Instead of South Beach, the piece points to Dania Beach between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, home to Whiskey Creek for kayaking and the Dania Pier for fishing. Instead of Clearwater Beach, it recommends Lido Key in Sarasota, about an hour south of the Tampa-St. Pete crowds.
