Krakow Shooting: Police Name Two Wounded Officers, Say Relatives Found Dead Are Believed to Be Gunman's Parents and Sister

Hours after a 25-year-old gunman drove through Krakow's Main Market Square and opened fire on Nov. 7, more details have emerged about the victims, the weapon and the officers who stopped him.
The three people found dead at the gunman's home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski are believed to be his parents and his sister, according to Andrzej Fijołek, deputy inspector of Police National Headquarters. Tusk had said earlier that there was "much to suggest" the bodies, two women and a man, were immediate family. Officials have not said how they died.
The officers
Tusk named the two police officers seriously wounded in the attack: senior constable Jakub Kulik and senior constable Artur Moranski.
"They likely saved lots of lives while risking their own lives," Tusk said. "Their conditions are serious but they are in good hands."
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said earlier that one of the officers was shot three times and underwent surgery. Police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said the gunman kept firing at police even after he was shot. The attacker was taken to a hospital around 3 p.m. local time and also underwent surgery.
The weapon
Fijołek said the attacker used a semi-automatic rifle similar to the American AR-15. Earlier accounts from authorities described the gun as an automatic weapon and a "military-type long gun."
Police found other weapons and ammunition in his car, Cisło said. He wore military-style fatigues and a bulletproof vest.
Authorities have not said whether the rifle or the other weapons were legally owned. How a 25-year-old came to hold that arsenal is the central open question for investigators.
Casualties and the suspect
Four women and two men were killed in the square. Three of the dead are Polish nationals and one is a U.K. citizen, according to Krakow police and the U.K. Foreign Secretary. Police commander Marek Boroń said two victims had not yet been identified. Names of the four identified victims have not been released.
At least 15 people were injured, including five non-Poles, Boroń said. Thirteen people were hospitalized in serious condition, a figure that may include the gunman. Two of the injured were treated and released within hours. Authorities say it is unclear how many of the wounded were actually shot.
The suspect is a Polish citizen born in 2002, according to police. His name has not been released. Cisło said he acted alone and that the public is safe.
Kierwiński said the man held "very radical" and "ultranationalistic" views. "Everything indicates that he was fascinated by far-right ideologies," he said. Poland's defense minister called the shooting an "act of terror," and Tusk used the word "terrorism."
The six killed in the square make this Poland's deadliest shooting since the fall of communism in 1989, according to reporting by AFP. Deadly shootings are extremely rare in the country.
Mourning and reaction
Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała said the city will be in official mourning through Wednesday, Nov. 11. Tusk announced two days of national mourning. Gibała vowed the city would stay open to visitors. "The square will belong to us again," he said in a video posted on X.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was "shocked and saddened by the appalling shooting" and offered condolences to the families of the dead and injured.
Witnesses described chaos. Annette, a woman in her sixties, told AFP she saw a man shooting at people and walking around the square. "It's a tragedy for Krakow, we've never seen anything like this before," she said.
What investigators still have to establish
Authorities have not yet said how the three relatives died or confirmed any link between their deaths and the square attack beyond the discovery at the suspect's home. They have not identified two of the dead, released the suspect's name, or confirmed the legal status of his weapons.
Police are still working to determine the full scale of the attack, the city said in posts on X.
