Korea Exchange Set to Open Evening Stock Trading Through 8 PM Starting Monday

Korea Exchange Set to Open Evening Stock Trading Through 8 PM Starting Monday
The Korea Exchange will launch a real-time after-market trading session from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting Monday, September 15, replacing a clunky 10-minute auction system. It's part of a broader push, including a roadmap to 24-hour trading by December 2027, to shed Korea's discount reputation and pull in foreign capital.

South Korea's main stock exchange is about to keep the lights on longer.

The Korea Exchange, known as KRX, announced on September 9 that it will launch a continuous after-market trading session starting Monday, September 14, running from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Korea Standard Time, according to Korea Times. That follows the regular close at 3:30 p.m. and a 30-minute closing-price auction.

The new session replaces a system that ran auction-style trades in 10-minute intervals between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Under the old setup, prices only updated every 10 minutes. The new system uses real-time order matching, the same continuous method used during the regular trading day, according to Korea Times and Crypto Briefing.

What's Covered, What's Not

KRX's after-market will cover listed stocks and depositary receipts on both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ boards, roughly 2,400 to 2,700 names depending on which report you check, excluding companies flagged for investment warnings or delisting procedures. ETFs and ETNs are excluded for now, with KRX saying it will revisit that after assessing liquidity and stability, per Korea Times.

Only limit orders will be accepted. No market orders. Price movement is capped at 30% above or below the previous close, same as the regular session, With volatility interruptions available if trading gets disorderly, according to Crypto Briefing and BigGo Finance. Thirty-eight brokerages representing 95.2% of current trading volume have signed up to participate.

A report from BigGo Finance describes an April 14 launch date for this same overhaul. That date reflects an earlier plan. Korea Times reports KRX originally aimed to roll out both pre-market and after-market sessions by the end of June but pushed the timeline back after industry feedback, landing on the September 14 start.

Competitive Pressure and a Bigger Goal

KRX isn't doing this in a vacuum. Nextrade, an alternative trading platform, introduced its own extended hours in March 2025, covering about 600 stocks, and grabbed nearly a third of trading activity within months, according to Bloomberg and Crypto Briefing. KRX's after-market dwarfs that in scope.

The long-term target is bigger than four extra hours. KRX has laid out a roadmap toward 12-hour daily trading as a milestone, with a full 24-hour market targeted by December 2027, according to Crypto Briefing and mk.co.kr. KRX Chairman Jung Eun-bo traveled to New York to sign a memorandum of understanding with the New York Stock Exchange on extending trading hours and shortening settlement cycles to T+1, mk.co.kr reported. NYSE Chief Executive Lynn Martin said the exchanges will work to improve global investors' market access. Jung also met with Silicon Valley technology companies and co-hosted a roadshow with Bank of America for roughly 20 institutional investors, including hedge funds, according to mk.co.kr.

The Korea Discount and Foreign Access

Korean equities have long traded at a discount to developed-market peers, a gap Korean financial authorities call the "Korea discount," according to Crypto Briefing. Longer hours and faster settlement are part of an effort to close that gap by making Korean stocks easier for global funds to trade under tight margin and collateral rules.

Edward Kim, head of Korea equities sales at Bank of America, called the move "another step in the ongoing evolution of Korea's capital markets and their accessibility to global investors," per Bloomberg. Young Jae Lee, senior investment manager at Pictet Asset Management in London, told Bloomberg the longer window "generally means more flexibility for investors" and will likely draw heavier use from trading-oriented investors and hedge funds. For foreign investors, the evening session overlaps with European morning hours, creating a real window for simultaneous Korea-Europe trading, according to KuCoin.

The timing sits alongside a broader U.S.-Korea relationship that has been active on multiple fronts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun discussed tariffs and investment agreements during an August 24 call, according to the Epoch Times, separate from the exchange's own outreach to U.S. markets and Silicon Valley.

Liquidity Will Tell

Whether anyone shows up to trade is the real test. Bloomberg reported that few expect an immediate surge in evening activity, especially after thin liquidity followed extended currency-market hours in July. The KOSPI more than doubled in 2026 through its peak on AI enthusiasm before a 22% selloff in July that sharply contracted turnover. The index remains up 64% for the year, still the world's best-performing major benchmark, per Bloomberg.

Monday's launch will show whether KRX's 95.2% brokerage coverage translates into real order flow, or whether the evening session becomes a thinly traded afterthought while Nextrade keeps its existing share of after-hours volume.
