JPMorgan Launches JPM Coin on Ethereum Mainnet, Institutional Clients Only

JPMorgan Launches JPM Coin on Ethereum Mainnet, Institutional Clients Only
JPMorgan announced Oct. 19 that its JPM Coin deposit token now runs on Ethereum's main network, adding to its existing Base deployment. Access stays limited to approved institutional clients, and the bank has not said how much money has moved through the new route. The next test is whether clients actually use it.

JPMorgan put its JPM Coin deposit token on the Ethereum mainnet, the bank announced Monday, Oct. 19. The token, ticker JPMD, was already live on Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network built by Coinbase.

The service belongs to Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, the bank's blockchain unit inside J.P. Morgan Payments. It is open only to the bank's institutional clients.

What JPM Coin is, and is not

JPMD represents US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan. It is not a stablecoin. Stablecoins are issued by private companies against reserves. A deposit token is a claim on money sitting in a regulated bank.

The bank says the token lets eligible clients move funds within seconds, around the clock. It supports peer-to-peer transfers between institutional clients across the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem, which now includes both Base and Ethereum.

A public blockchain does not mean public access. JPMorgan said the token stays restricted to approved participants. Ordinary Ethereum wallet holders cannot hold it, and the bank has announced no retail rollout.

Why Ethereum

Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, said the bank chose Ethereum for its liquidity and its existing use among clients. In the bank's announcement she said: "Tokenized financial infrastructure is no longer theoretical. It's already restructuring liquidity, settlement, and digital asset workflows."

She described the two-chain setup as "multi-chain optionality for moving wholesale money across both the web3 and traditional finance ecosystems."

Landriault said crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments. Financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral. JPMorgan also pitches "programmable treasury," meaning automated cash management run from a client's wallet interface. Those are intended uses. The bank has not said which are already happening on Ethereum.

Matthew Dawson, co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, welcomed the move. He called it "a clear signal that institutional finance is moving onto public, verifiable infrastructure." The firm has an obvious interest in that message.

The timeline

JPM Coin began as a proof of concept in June 2025. It became available to institutional clients on Base on Nov. 12, 2025. In January, JPMorgan announced plans to bring it to the Canton Network.

The bank's asset management arm has also put products on Ethereum. The My OnChain Net Yield Fund (MONY), a private-placement money market fund, launched Dec. 15, 2025. The JPMorgan OnChain Liquidity-Token Money Market Fund (JLTXX), a US-registered government money market fund, followed May 13, 2026. Qualified investors reach both through the bank's Morgan Money platform.

The pieces now share a network, but the October announcement does not describe a live process for using JPMD to subscribe to or redeem those funds. Access to a fund through Morgan Money also does not confer eligibility to hold JPM Coin.

The numbers

JPMorgan says Kinexys has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions, with average daily volume of about $7 billion. Those figures cover the whole platform, which includes its older private network. They say nothing about JPM Coin activity on Ethereum.

The bank has not disclosed how much has moved through the Ethereum deployment, or how many clients have signed on. Nor has it said whether any institution is using it to settle trades or post collateral.

The launch also does not create a new trade-finance or supplier-finance facility. Banks still have to verify counterparties, meet sanctions requirements and confirm that underlying obligations are enforceable.

What to watch

The commercial question is adoption. JPMorgan has built a second public-chain route for bank-issued dollars. Whether institutions use it to settle tokenized assets and collateral, or leave it idle next to the Base version, will show in usage figures the bank has not yet released.

The Canton Network deployment announced in January is the other open item. The bank has not given a date for it.
