Joby Aviation's Autonomous Cessna Flies 3,199 Miles Across the US With Zero Pilot Inputs

Joby Aviation says it flew an aircraft across the country without a single control input from the person sitting in the cockpit. The company announced on September 18, 2026 that a converted Cessna Caravan equipped with its autonomy system completed what it calls the first-ever fully autonomous flight across the United States, covering 3,199 miles from Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, California, to Dare County Regional Airport in North Carolina's Outer Banks.

According to Joby's own announcement, the aircraft departed Concord on September 7 and handled taxiing, takeoff, route navigation, and landing entirely on its own during the eastbound leg. A safety pilot stayed on board for regulatory compliance but never touched the controls, the company said. Joby also supervised the flight remotely from its headquarters in Santa Cruz, California, and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, at one point operating the aircraft from as far as 2,323 miles away, per the company's release.

The route included stops at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport, described by Joby as one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, and Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Texas, where the company demonstrated freight-logistics applications. At Shaw Air Force Base, the aircraft took part in a military operations demonstration. Interesting Engineering reported the flight also supported North Carolina's eLIFT-NC initiative, which studies statewide transport of medical supplies.

Before landing at Dare County Regional Airport, the aircraft flew a low pass near the First Flight Monument at Kitty Hawk, the site where Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first powered flight in 1903. Multiple outlets, including Epoch Times and Times of India, noted the symbolism of an unmanned aircraft passing over the birthplace of piloted flight 123 years later.

What Actually Got Tested, and What Didn't

This was a conventional Cessna Caravan, not Joby's electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing air taxi, which is still working through Federal Aviation Administration type certification. Runtime Wire noted the test proved long-distance autonomous operation on an existing airframe, not autonomous passenger service, the battery range of Joby's electric aircraft, or readiness for pilotless urban flights.

Joby's autonomy technology comes from its 2024 acquisition of Xwing's autonomy division, according to Interesting Engineering, which also reported the program has logged more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours across controlled and uncontrolled airspace. The outlet said Joby's system delivered replacement parts 24 hours faster than conventional logistics during an Air Force Agile Flag exercise, and separately demonstrated remote operation between Hawaii and Guam, roughly 4,000 miles apart.

Runtime Wire also reported that Joby's pending acquisition of Resonant Sciences, if it closes, would make Resonant the company's dedicated defense business and fold in Joby's autonomy stack along with its turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft programs. That deal has not been confirmed as finalized in these reports.

The Skeptic's Case

Not everyone is convinced pilotless passenger flight is close. Epoch Times cited Robert Wilkos, co-founder of Houston-based charter firm VIPJets.com, who argued in a March blog post that shifting responsibility from "crew in cockpit" to "system plus remote supervision" moves liability and complicates insurance. Wilkos said he expects fully pilotless business jets to remain a long-term goal rather than a near-term product, and that single-pilot operations, which still keep a human decision-maker in the loop, are likely the more realistic next step for regulators and insurers.

Insurers and the FAA have historically demanded extremely high proof before reducing crew requirements on any commercial aircraft, let alone eliminating the pilot altogether. Joby's flight demonstrated remote supervision at long range worked without incident on this trip, but one successful demonstration flight is not the kind of statistical safety record regulators require before certifying reduced-crew or pilotless commercial operations.

CEO JoeBen Bevirt framed the flight as forward-looking rather than a finished product. "This journey across America offers a glimpse into a new era of aviation," Bevirt said in the company's announcement, adding that autonomy could help "connect remote communities, deliver critical supplies, respond faster to disasters, support military operations, and keep pilots out of harm's way."

The aircraft is now on its westbound leg, with planned stops in Raleigh, the Washington, D.C. area, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, and Portland, Oregon, according to both Joby and Interesting Engineering. Whether the FAA, the Pentagon, or freight carriers move to actually deploy this system commercially rather than treat it as a demonstration tour remains the key question.
