The driver, per both outlets, is water temperature. Sea surface temperatures east of Greenland have risen roughly 2 degrees Celsius since the 1990s, and that warming has pulled capelin, a small oily fish central to the North Atlantic food web, into waters the whales can now access without navigating pack ice. Not every Arctic species is benefiting. Heide-Jørgensen told BBC News that narwhals and belugas are now sharing habitat with, or being displaced by, the incoming baleen whales. "For some species, climate change is not necessarily a problem - it opens up new opportunities," he said, "but other species are losing their habitat."

A parallel search for a nearly extinct whale

While fin, humpback, and minke whales are moving into new Arctic territory, a much rarer species may be doing the same, with far higher stakes. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) reported that an international team of scientists deployed an autonomous underwater glider this summer between Iceland and Greenland to listen for North Atlantic right whales, of which only about 380 individuals remain.

IFAW noted that a North Atlantic right whale was confirmed off the coast of Ireland in 2024, the first such sighting there in 114 years, identified by its unique callosity pattern. Researchers believe the tiny copepods these whales feed on are shifting location as ocean temperatures and currents change, and the glider survey is meant to determine whether the whales are following their prey back into historically important European and North Atlantic waters they abandoned generations ago.
