Farage Wins Clacton By-Election He Called on Himself, Skips the Count Over Disputed Police Warning

Nigel Farage is back in Parliament as the MP for Clacton, having won a by-election he called himself a month ago to escape questions about his money.

The Reform UK leader took 22,239 votes, according to the Irish Times and Chronicle Live, which was 63 percent of the vote and a 12,784-vote majority. His margin was up from the 8,405-vote advantage he held in the 2024 general election. Turnout was 44.37 percent, down roughly 14 points from 2024.

His nearest challenger wasn't a politician. It was Count Binface, a satirical candidate in a costume, who took 9,455 votes, according to Politico and India Today. Binface ran on a platform of cutting some people's taxes while raising everyone else's, building one affordable home, and nationalizing singer Adele. It was his best result in eight election runs, per India Today, and he cleared 5 percent of the vote, enough to get his 500 pound candidate deposit back.

Thirty-four candidates stood in total. Thirty-two of them lost their deposits, a record, according to Chronicle Live. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens all boycotted the race, calling it a stunt, per the Mirror and Chronicle Live. That left Farage facing no serious political opposition.

Why this election happened at all

Farage resigned his seat on July 7 and forced this contest himself. He'd been under mounting scrutiny over a 5 million pound donation from crypto entrepreneur Christopher Harborne, received before he was elected in 2024 and not declared at the time, according to Politico. He'd also faced questions about support tied to George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster, per Politico.

Farage framed the resignation and rematch as a "people versus the establishment" test, asking Clacton voters to serve as his judge. Two parliamentary investigations into his finances were paused for the campaign and are set to resume now that he's won, according to Politico and ABC Australia. If either investigation finds he broke the rules, it could trigger yet another election in Clacton.

Labour called the result "no victory for Nigel Farage" and said it "shows he likely has so much to hide," according to the Mirror. That's a political attack line, not a finding of wrongdoing. No charges have been filed and no investigation has concluded against Farage. The probes are ongoing, and what they'll find is genuinely unresolved.

Farage's own defense, delivered to GB News per the Irish Times, was blunt: "If I made one sin, if I haven't filled in a piece of paper, I've broken no law, I've broken no tax law, I've taken no public money, I don't even own a motorhome." That's his position on record, and it deserves to be weighed alongside the scrutiny, not buried under it.

The count he skipped

Farage broke with British by-election tradition by not showing up for the official declaration at Clacton Leisure Centre. He declared victory hours early at a Reform-organized event dubbed "Farage-fest," telling supporters: "I'm damned if I'm going to stand on a stage, having won a resounding victory, and be demeaned and humiliated by nobodies," according to the Irish Times and Chronicle Live.

A Reform UK spokesperson said Essex Police had advised Farage not to attend due to a "credible threat" against him, per Chronicle Live and the Irish Times. Essex Police disputes that account. A force spokesperson said only that police had "a proportionate and robust policing operation to ensure the safety and security of all participants in the count," and the Press Association reported that Essex Police did not tell Farage or any other candidate to stay away, according to both the Irish Times and Chronicle Live.
