Dreyer's Recalls Five Outshine Fruit Bar Flavors Over Possible Glass Contamination

Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream announced a voluntary recall over the weekend, pulling five flavors of Outshine Fruit Bars off shelves nationwide over fears the frozen treats might contain glass. The company's statement was dated Aug. 16.

The affected products are Strawberry, Watermelon, Grape, Tangerine and Black Cherry, all sold in 6-count, 2.5-ounce paddle bar packaging, according to the company's press release. These were distributed to major retailers across the country, including Walmart, Target and Walgreens, according to Ground News.

Dreyer's said the recall was issued "due to possible foreign material contamination with glass," according to a statement reported by Sunday Guardian Live. The company did not explain how glass might have ended up in the product.

"The safety, quality, and integrity of our products remain our highest priority," Dreyer's said in its statement, as reported by Fox5DC. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause our consumers and retail customers, and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality."

How to Check Your Freezer

Each flavor has its own UPC code and best-by dates, and consumers need to check both, not just the flavor name, since not every batch of every flavor is affected.

According to CBS News and the New York Post, here's the breakdown:

• Strawberry: UPC 041548610047, best-by dates September 30, October 31, or November 30, 2027
• Watermelon: UPC 041548413624, best-by dates June 30 or July 31, 2027
• Tangerine: UPC 041548612041, best-by date October 31, 2027
• Grape: two separate UPCs affected, 041548244044 (best-by September 30 or October 31, 2027) and 041548000121 (best-by July 31, 2027)
• Black Cherry: UPC 041548000121

The codes are printed on the bottom of the box. If your bars match, Dreyer's is telling customers to toss them or bring them back to the store for a full refund. No receipt needed, per the standard recall process outlets like WNDU and WAFF described.

No Injuries, But Some Complaints

Dreyer's says no illnesses or injuries have been reported connected to the recall. Sunday Guardian Live noted the company acknowledged receiving "a small number of consumer complaints," though it didn't specify what those complaints involved beyond the general glass contamination concern.

Anyone who thinks they got hurt from eating one of these bars should see a doctor, the company said. Swallowing hard or sharp material can damage teeth, the mouth, throat, or digestive tract. This is exactly why the company pulled these products rather than waiting for a confirmed injury to force action.

Not the Brand's First Recall

This isn't Outshine's first rodeo. Sunday Guardian Live reported this marks the second Outshine recall in as many years, following a 2023 incident involving an undeclared milk allergen in the brand's No Sugar Added Strawberry line that hit retailers in fourteen states.

Two recalls in three years for one product line isn't a crisis, but it warrants attention. Food safety systems are built to catch problems before they become widespread. The question is whether Dreyer's quality control at the manufacturing level needs closer scrutiny, or whether these are isolated, unconnected incidents. Nothing in the company's statements or the reporting here answers that.
