DNC Approves 2028 Calendar, Dumps Iowa and New Hampshire for South Carolina and Nevada

DNC Approves 2028 Calendar, Dumps Iowa and New Hampshire for South Carolina and Nevada
The Democratic National Committee voted Saturday to make South Carolina, not Iowa or New Hampshire, the first 2028 primary state, with Nevada second. The party says it's chasing Black and Latino voters after Kamala Harris's 2024 collapse with Hispanic voters. New Hampshire is furious, and the fight over who controls the party's future just got a new battlefield.

The Democratic National Committee voted Saturday, August 15, to finalize a new 2028 presidential primary calendar that removes Iowa entirely from the early nominating window and demotes New Hampshire from its traditional first-in-the-nation spot, elevating South Carolina and Nevada to the top two slots, according to CNN.

Under the approved schedule, South Carolina votes first on January 22, 2028, followed by Nevada on February 1, New Hampshire on February 8, New Mexico on February 15, Michigan on February 22, and Virginia on February 29, according to ABC News. The rest of the states follow starting with Super Tuesday on March 7, 2028.

The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee already voted in late July to recommend this same lineup, and Saturday's vote made it official, according to ABC News.

Why South Carolina and Nevada

The DNC's stated reasoning is blunt: demographics. DNC Chair Ken Martin said in a statement that the six early states are home to more than 4.6 million Black Americans, 4.2 million Latinos, nearly 1.4 million Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander residents, and nearly 370,000 Native Americans. Martin also touted 14 million residents without a college degree, 1.1 million union workers, and 2.1 million veterans across the six states.
