Crusoe Hits $30 Billion Valuation as Jane Street's AI Compute Bets Top $21 Billion

Crusoe Hits $30 Billion Valuation as Jane Street's AI Compute Bets Top $21 Billion
A quant trading firm that has never sold an AI product now holds more contracted AI compute than most model developers. Jane Street Group's spending across CoreWeave, Crusoe, FluidStack, and chip startup Etched adds up to over $21 billion, and it just helped push Crusoe's valuation to $30 billion. The bigger question nobody's answering yet: can any of these companies actually build the data centers fast enough to make good on the paper.

Bloomberg reported on September 3 that Denver-based AI infrastructure company Crusoe closed a $3 billion Series F round at a $30 billion post-money valuation, co-led by Atreides Management and Valor Equity Partners, with Mubadala Capital, the asset management arm of Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, also participating.

That's roughly triple the $10 billion valuation Crusoe hit last October when it closed a $1.375 billion Series E backed by Nvidia, Fidelity, and Founders Fund, according to Tech Funding News.

The number that pulled new money into the round wasn't Crusoe's own pitch. It was a customer: Bloomberg reported, and multiple outlets including The Next Web and Tech Funding News confirmed, that Jane Street Group signed a roughly $13 billion, five-year cloud deal with Crusoe for GPU clusters and supporting infrastructure.

A Trading Firm Out-Spending the AI Labs

Jane Street trades securities. It doesn't sell AI software or models to anyone. And yet its AI infrastructure commitments now total more than $21 billion, according to Tech Times: $6 billion in cloud capacity from CoreWeave, a $1 billion equity stake in CoreWeave at $109 per share taken in April, roughly $13 billion in Crusoe cloud capacity, and a $1.5 billion equity round in rival infrastructure startup FluidStack that Jane Street led this week.

On top of that, Jane Street led a $700 million Series D round in AI chip startup Etched on August 18, valuing the company at $21 billion, according to the Epoch Times. That's more than double Etched's $10.3 billion valuation from just one month earlier, in July. Etched shipped its first rack of inference chips to Jane Street, which called the results "pleased" and said the chips deliver "the precision we will need to support our most demanding workloads," per the company's statement to Etched.

Quant trading is genuinely one of the most compute-hungry businesses that exists. Pricing models, risk systems, signal research and trade simulation all run on the same hardware that trains large language models. A firm at Jane Street's scale locking in capacity years ahead of when it needs it, rather than bidding for scraps later, is a defensible business decision.

But the scale still upends the standard story of who's buying AI infrastructure. For most of this boom, demand has been framed as a fight among OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft for scarce GPUs. A proprietary trading firm quietly out-committing most of those labs combined changes what "demand" even means in this market.

Contracts as Collateral

Bloomberg also reported that Crusoe was separately seeking a chip loan backed by its Jane Street contracts before the deal was made public, meaning the agreement functioned as loan collateral before investors even knew it existed, according to The Next Web.

Contracted revenue gets pledged against the debt that buys the hardware needed to service that same contract. The structure holds exactly as long as the customer keeps paying and the builder can deliver the physical infrastructure on schedule. Tech Funding News called that gap between paper contracts and running data centers "the story to watch."

It's not an isolated pattern. The Next Web noted that Crusoe's rival Nscale is separately seeking a $51 billion U.S. listing built on contracted revenue that, in that outlet's words, "has largely not arrived yet." Synergy Research Group puts total neocloud revenue at over $25 billion for 2025 and forecasts it will approach $400 billion by 2031, a 58% annual growth rate Tech Funding News says helps explain why investors are willing to triple a private company's valuation in under a year. Whether that growth materializes on schedule, or whether it's built on promises ahead of delivery, is the open question the industry hasn't answered.

One source in our review, KuCoin, published a headline claiming Crusoe's valuation "reaches $300 billion," a tenfold error contradicted by its own article body, which correctly states approximately $30 billion, matching Bloomberg, Tech Funding News, and every other outlet tracking the deal.

What Comes Next

Axios reported last month that Crusoe met with JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America to discuss a potential listing, according to Tech Funding News, which cautioned that nothing is confirmed. Between the fresh capital, the Jane Street contract, and the bank meetings, Crusoe looks like it's positioning for public markets whether or not it says so outright.

Neither Jane Street nor Crusoe has disclosed where the new GPU capacity will physically sit, what chips are involved, or the delivery schedule, according to The Next Web. Crusoe is already building OpenAI and Oracle's 1.2-gigawatt Stargate campus in Abilene, Texas. Whether it can add Jane Street's $13 billion order to that pipeline without slipping timelines is the thing to watch before anyone calls this a settled bet rather than a very large, very leveraged one.
