Chile Nursing Home Fire Kills 16 at Facility Cited for Safety Violations Since 2019

A fire destroyed a nursing home in southern Chile late Friday night, killing 16 elderly residents at a facility that regulators had been citing for safety violations since 2019.

The blaze broke out around 10:30 p.m. local time at the El Edén Long Stay Facility in Villa Comuy, a town near Pitrufquén in Chile's Araucanía Region, roughly 640 kilometers south of Santiago, according to Al Jazeera and the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Firefighters extinguished the flames early Saturday morning.

Twenty-six people were inside when the fire started. Ten were evacuated and taken to a local hospital, according to Pitrufquén Mayor Jacqueline Romero. The other 16 died.

General Miguel Herrera, head of the Araucanía Zone of the Carabineros, told local outlet T13 that "only 10 people living in the nursing home were evacuated. We must lament the death of 16 people, who are the ones that have been found by firefighters at this time."

BNO News reported that a single caregiver was on duty at the time the fire broke out and personally evacuated the 10 survivors. Authorities are now investigating whether that caregiver was a trained nursing technician, citing a regional government official speaking to the outlet Araucanía Diario.

TMZ, citing the Public Prosecutor's office, reported a detail other outlets did not emphasize: not everyone inside the facility was elderly. The prosecutor told Chilean broadcaster 24 Horas, "There were about 26 adult people. According to initial investigations, not all were elderly who were in this home. There was one person in charge of them, a nursing assistant." This distinction affects the investigation into staffing ratios and who the facility was licensed to house.

A Facility Regulators Already Knew Was a Problem

El Edén was not an unknown risk. Jose Bravo, an official with the regional health secretariat, said the home had faced administrative proceedings and fines dating back to 2019 and was a "repeat offender" operating outside regulations, according to Al Jazeera and the Inquirer.

Mayor Romero said the municipality sent a letter in February 2026 specifically requesting an inspection because the facility was out of compliance and already subject to sanitary enforcement proceedings. BNO News additionally reported that Pitrufquén's municipal government filed a separate complaint that same month over alleged mistreatment of residents inside the home, and that an administrative investigation into the facility had been open since last year.

If a private nursing home was fined repeatedly for seven years, flagged for abuse allegations, and still under active sanitary enforcement as of this February, why was it still operating with 26 people inside on a Friday night in September? No source in this reporting shows a definitive answer yet, and no charges have been filed against anyone connected to the home as of Saturday.

The fair counterpoint, which regulators themselves would likely raise, is that fines and enforcement proceedings are not the same as a shutdown order. A facility can be cited, fined, and still remain legally open while it works through an administrative process, particularly if it disputes the findings or partially corrects them. Whether Chilean law gave regulators the authority to force closure faster, or whether they had that authority and failed to use it, is an open question that the current investigation has not yet answered.

Investigation Underway, President Orders Nationwide Review

Local prosecutor Jorge Granada said his office is examining the scene and questioning witnesses to determine how the fire started and to rule out third-party involvement. The Public Prosecutor's office said the Organized Crime and Homicide team and the Carabineros Criminalistics laboratory are working the case alongside detectives from investigative unit OS-9, according to TMZ. The owner of the nursing home has been questioned as a suspect, but BNO News reported no charges have been announced.

Chilean President José Antonio Kast posted on X demanding the full circumstances be investigated and said he ordered "urgent measures" to assess conditions at nursing homes across the country and identify what changes are needed, according to both Al Jazeera and the Inquirer.

A nearby high school has been converted into a shelter for families affected by the fire, according to the Daily Mirror. Firefighters spent Saturday clearing debris and collapsed corrugated metal roofing while police secured the site.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Investigators have not said whether it started from an electrical fault, a heating source, or something else, and Granada's office has given no timeline for when a cause will be confirmed. Chile's health ministry has not yet detailed what the president's nationwide nursing home review will examine or when its findings will be released.
