Anthropic's Seven Cofounders Could Hold Up to $203 Billion at a $2 Trillion IPO Valuation, Fortune Calculates

Anthropic's Seven Cofounders Could Hold Up to $203 Billion at a $2 Trillion IPO Valuation, Fortune Calculates
Anthropic's S-1 shows seven cofounders each holding roughly 231 million to 244 million shares, and a special Class F share gives them 50.1% of the vote. At the $2 trillion valuation that has been reported, the group's stakes would be worth about $189 billion to $203 billion, and a commentator is already questioning where their philanthropy pledge will go. Marketing is set to begin the week of Nov. 9, with trading expected the week of Nov. 16.

Since Anthropic filed its S-1 on Oct. 26 for a Nasdaq listing under the ticker ANT, attention has shifted to who owns what, and what that ownership could be worth once the stock trades.

No shares are trading yet. Marketing to investors is set to begin the week of Nov. 9, with trading expected the week of Nov. 16. The filing does not give a price range or a final share count.

What the cofounders hold

The S-1 lists seven cofounders: Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Tom Brown, Christopher Olah, Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark and Sam McCandlish. Each holds roughly 231 million to 244 million shares. Together that is about 1.69 billion shares, or roughly 10% of the company.

Brown, the chief compute officer, holds the most at about 244 million shares. That is slightly more than CEO Dario Amodei, who owns 240.6 million shares and controls voting proxies over another 4.6 million. Olah holds about 242.9 million, Kaplan 242.4 million, Clark 242.3 million, Daniela Amodei 241.4 million and McCandlish about 231.8 million.

At the latest private funding price of $58.90 per share, Fortune calculated each stake at $13.7 billion to $14.4 billion. The filing implies about 16.9 billion fully diluted shares, so each founder owns about 1.4%.

The valuation math

The $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion range is a reported expectation, not a number in the prospectus. Anthropic was valued at $965 billion in May.

Fortune's estimate at $2 trillion assumes a share price of about $118. On that basis each stake would be worth $27 billion to $29 billion, or $189 billion to $203 billion for the seven combined. At $1.5 trillion, Brown's stake would be worth roughly $24 billion, according to Business Insider's calculation.

All seven are listed as selling stockholders. The filing does not say how many shares they plan to sell.

Control and pay

Immediately before the IPO, Anthropic plans to issue a single Class F share to an LLC controlled by the seven cofounders. That share carries 50.1% of the company's voting power on matters put to shareholders. Snap's Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy kept about 89% of the vote after Snap's 2017 IPO, so concentrated founder control is not new to Silicon Valley. What differs here is the number of founders and how evenly the stakes are split.

The S-1 states: "Each co-founder is paid equal compensation." Dario and Daniela Amodei each drew a $654,167 salary last year. Their salaries rose to about $1.4 million effective July 1, 2026, with additional equity awards. Dario Amodei's total 2025 compensation was about $18 million and Daniela Amodei's about $16.4 million, with the gap coming from other compensation items.

Robin Ferracone, founder of Farient Advisors, told Fortune the "egalitarian approach" is unusual. Pay and awards typically diverge over time as equity vests and compensation gets tied to individual roles, she said.

The business behind the number

Figures from the filing show Anthropic brought in $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026, up 1,300% from a year earlier. The second quarter alone produced $11.6 billion and the company's first reported operating profit. It also posted a net loss of $80.7 billion, which was driven largely by non-cash accounting adjustments tied to its rising valuation.

The philanthropy pledge

The founders have pledged 80% of their personal Anthropic equity to philanthropic causes. The pledge is revocable, which makes it a stated intention rather than a binding legal commitment.

Commentator Jordan Schachtel, writing in American Greatness, argues the pledge, once the shares are liquid, will "dramatically expand the liquid resources" of the Effective Altruism network around the company. He says that money will back people and groups "trying to manipulate society into bending to its ideals." He compares the dynamic to Soros and Steyer.

Schachtel points to ties between Dario Amodei and EA institutions. Cofounder Chris Olah told the group 80,000 Hours that Amodei gave part of his graduate-student stipend to GiveWell as early as 2012-2013. Schachtel adds that Daniela Amodei is married to Holden Karnofsky, a cofounder of GiveWell and Open Philanthropy, which has since been renamed Coefficient Giving. He says Amodei and Clark have signed the Giving What We Can pledge. He also says Dario Amodei personally donated $1 million to Public First in May and that Anthropic-linked money will favor Democrats and EA priorities. Those political-spending claims are his; the S-1 figures do not address them.

Philanthropic giving by wealthy founders is lawful, and the revocable pledge does not name recipients or commit a dollar to politics. The EA ties Schachtel describes are documented in his piece through the founders' own interviews and pledges. His forecast of where the money will go is a prediction, not something any filing establishes.

What comes next

The next concrete data points are the price range and share count that Anthropic has yet to disclose, and how many shares each of the seven sells. Those numbers will fix what the founders' stakes are worth and how much of the pledged equity could reach charities. Marketing to investors is set to open the week of Nov. 9.
