AMLO's Son Says State Department Revoked His US Visa, Writes Letter to Trump

Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says the U.S. government revoked his visa. He posted a letter to Donald Trump on Instagram Thursday night demanding answers.

In the letter, López Beltrán accuses Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau of ordering the revocation, according to the Associated Press. He says there's no evidence tying him to any crime. His words: "There is no reason whatsoever to justify such an arrogant action," and the officials have "no evidence against me regarding any immoral or criminal act," per Al Jazeera's translation of the letter.

The State Department hasn't said why. A U.S. Embassy spokesperson in Mexico, granted anonymity by the AP because they weren't authorized to speak on the record, said visa records are confidential under U.S. law and declined to comment on the specific case. That's standard practice, not evidence of a cover-up. But it also means the public has no way to check whether this decision was justified or political.

This isn't an isolated incident. Reuters reported in October that the Trump administration has revoked visas for at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials across the political spectrum as part of a broader crackdown tied to cartel links. State Department officials have said cancellations can hit officials tied to drug trafficking, corruption, or aiding illegal immigration. Four months before this latest case, federal prosecutors in New York indicted 10 current and former Mexican officials, including Sinaloa Gov. Rubén Rocha Moya of the ruling Morena party, over alleged cartel connections, according to the AP.

López Beltrán, 39, known as "Andy," was one of his father's closest aides before AMLO's 2018 election win, managing his private schedule and running Morena's operations in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, per local media cited by the AP. He mostly stayed out of politics during his father's presidency, running a chocolate business instead, until he was elected Morena's secretary of organization in September 2024, weeks before AMLO left office. He recently stepped down from that party post and is gearing up to run for a seat in Mexico's Chamber of Deputies in the 2027 midterms, likely out of Tabasco.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum weighed in at her Friday morning news conference, calling the visa revocation "essentially political in nature," according to the AP. She said she's unaware of any Mexican prosecutorial investigation into López Beltrán and framed the U.S. actions against "politically exposed" Mexicans as a sovereignty issue. "This amounts to interference in Mexican politics," Sheinbaum said. "I see no other reason for it." She also said Washington should provide evidence if it has any, but made clear she doesn't want this to escalate into a diplomatic fight: "All we ask for is respect."

Sheinbaum's position is defensible. If the U.S. is going to strip travel privileges from foreign politicians, transparency matters, especially when it involves the son of a former head of state with no publicly disclosed criminal case against him. Confidentiality laws protecting visa records exist for good reasons, but they also make it nearly impossible to distinguish a legitimate cartel-linked national security action from a politically convenient one. That's a real tension.

Mexico's own government has documented deep cartel infiltration into local and state politics for years, and Washington's list of 50-plus revoked visas spans multiple parties, not just Morena. If this were purely about silencing left-wing officials, you'd expect fewer revocations hitting Mexico's opposition figures too. Reuters' reporting notes the crackdown has touched "figures across the political spectrum."

López Beltrán didn't hold back in his letter, either. He accused unnamed U.S. officials and hardliners of smearing foreign politicians as "communists," "threats to U.S. security," or "narco-terrorists," and said he doesn't mind skipping trips to a country he describes as gripped by "hatred, racism and drug addiction," per Reuters and MarketScreener's translation. He also invoked a June open letter from his father accusing Washington of "interventionist and unscrupulous practices" aimed at boosting Mexico's right-wing opposition.

None of that rhetoric proves or disproves why his visa was pulled. The State Department has not responded to media requests for comment, and no public evidence has been presented tying López Beltrán to cartel activity, corruption, or any other disqualifying conduct. Until Rubio's office says something on the record, this stays exactly what it looks like right now: an accusation with no public evidence on either side.
