195,000 JKMax Heated Blankets Recalled After 53 Burn Injuries, CPSC Says

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday that roughly 195,000 JKMax heated blankets and heating pads sold on Amazon are being recalled because their internal wire heating elements can overheat, according to CBS News and the CPSC's recall notice.

JKMax told the CPSC it is aware of 577 reports of the products smoking, melting or burning. Fifty-three of those incidents resulted in burn injuries, according to the filing cited by CBS News and USA Today.

What's Covered

The recall covers five model numbers: JKMAX-002, JKMAX-7284B, JKMAX-6284B, JKMAX-10090B and JKMAX-8490B. The blankets and pads came in blue, gray, brown or red polyester, sold individually or in two-packs, according to the CPSC.

The model number is printed on the back of the detachable remote control and on a white label attached to the packaging. Consumers should check both spots regardless of color, size or whether the product was bought alone or in a pack.

The recalled items were sold on Amazon between September 2022 and July 2026, meaning some of these blankets were on the market for nearly four years before the recall notice went out this week. The CPSC assigned the action recall number 26-778.

Where the Blankets Were Made

NTD reported the JKMax products were imported by Jiande Pengshuai Trading Co. Ltd. of China, a detail not included in the CBS News, USA Today, or Cox Media Group coverage of the same recall. The CPSC notice itself does not list a retail price for the products.

A heated blanket overheating and burning a consumer is a straightforward safety failure, not a policy dispute. The recall does underscore a gap in how third-party marketplace goods get vetted before they land in someone's living room. Amazon lists the JKMax products as sold through its platform, and the CPSC recall directs consumers to Amazon's own "Recalls and Product Safety Alerts" page for more information, according to both CBS News and NTD.

Refunds and Discrepancies

Consumers who own the recalled blankets or pads should stop using them immediately and contact JKMax for a full refund, the CPSC said.

Most outlets, including CBS News, Cox Media Group's WFTV, WDBO and wmmo, and NTD, list the company's refund line as 800-917-5732, reachable weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern. USA Today's report lists a different number, 800-917-5723, and also states the total recall figure as 198,000 in its headline while citing 195,000 in the body text. Consumers should rely on the CPSC's own recall notice or JKMax's website, jkmaxrecall.com, to confirm contact information rather than any single news report.

What's Not Answered

The recall notice does not explain why it took roughly four years of sales and 577 reports of overheating before the product was pulled. The CPSC filing also doesn't specify how many of the 577 incident reports occurred in each year the product was on the market, so it's unclear whether the overheating problem worsened over time or was present from the start.

The CPSC generally relies on manufacturers to self-report safety problems once they cross a threshold of severity or frequency, a system critics of the agency have long argued gives companies too much discretion over when, or whether, to flag a hazard. There's no evidence in the CPSC filing that JKMax delayed reporting improperly, and no enforcement action beyond the recall itself has been announced.

Anyone with a JKMax heated blanket or pad matching the recalled model numbers has one clear next step: unplug it, check the label, and call JKMax for the refund before another cold-weather season starts.
