The claim and who made it

A claim that Chinese President Xi Jinping suffered a stroke during the September 12-13 BRICS summit in New Delhi has circulated on X since mid-September, but as of September 17, 2026, it remains unverified by any government, hospital, or independent outlet.

The allegation traces to Wanjun Xie, identified by the Times of India as chairman of the China Democracy Party, a dissident group opposed to Beijing. Xie claimed Xi fainted during the summit, was treated by his accompanying medical team, and then flew back to Beijing where a military helicopter allegedly took him to the People's Liberation Army General Hospital, known as 301 Hospital. Xie further alleged doctors diagnosed an ischaemic stroke and that Xi's decision to return to China rather than seek treatment in India cost him a critical treatment window. Xie also suggested the illness could affect a planned Xi visit to the United States later this month.

None of that has been independently confirmed. No hospital, Chinese official, or Indian official has verified the diagnosis, the helicopter transfer, or the treatment timeline described in the post, according to Nation Thailand.

What China's own schedule shows

China's Foreign Ministry announced on September 10 that Xi would attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13, and he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 12 as planned, per Nation Thailand. His departure on September 13 matched that pre-announced itinerary. That timeline doesn't prove nothing happened after he left India, but it does contradict the idea that he unexpectedly cut his trip short.

India's government pushes back

India's Ministry of External Affairs fact-check unit posted directly on X: "Fake Alert!!! We caution against such malicious posts on social media platforms!" according to the Times of India, which reported the warning covered social media claims about the health of multiple leaders, including both Xi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The claim reportedly gained traction partly because Xi skipped the summit dinner, the Times of India noted. Skipping one dinner at a multi-day summit is a thin reed to build a stroke diagnosis on, and no source in this reporting connects that absence to any confirmed medical event.

A real illness, but a different leader

Ramaphosa did withdraw from public engagements after returning from the summit. His office said Wednesday he had been advised by doctors to rest and recover due to ill health, without specifying the illness, per the Times of India. He returned from New Delhi on Monday and had ministers stand in for him at scheduled events.

This is a real, on-the-record health story involving a different leader with a different, still-vague set of facts. Conflating it with the unverified Xi stroke claim, as some social media activity has done, is not supported by anything in the record. A reasonable skeptic might argue that Ramaphosa's sudden withdrawal plus Xi's skipped dinner together warrant real scrutiny of what happened at that summit. But scrutiny is not the same as confirmation, and nothing in the official record from Beijing, New Delhi, or Pretoria ties the two events together or confirms a stroke.

The summit itself had plenty of real news

The BRICS gathering drew leaders from 28 countries, according to NPR, including Xi's first visit to India in seven years following the deadly 2020 border clash that killed more than 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers. Retired U.S. Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink told NPR that Xi had incentive to stabilize ties with India ahead of an expected Washington visit "in less than two weeks."

Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first trip to India since the Ukraine war began, meeting Modi ahead of the summit, according to Fox News. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met the UAE's crown prince, and the summit's final statement called for restraint in the Middle East, an outcome Kritenbrink called notable given Iran and the UAE's tensions.

Iran's diplomatic push otherwise fell flat. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi failed to rally BRICS behind Tehran against U.S. sanctions and returned to Beijing this week, according to Breitbart, which noted Iran's push for BRICS members to trade in national currencies has limited appeal given the rial's collapse.

Separately, Delhi police arrested 64 Tibetan activists on September 12 during protests against Xi's visit organized by the Tibetan Youth Congress, according to the Epoch Times, which also reported China shipped armored Hongqi limousines to New Delhi ahead of Xi's arrival.

What's still unknown

No Chinese state media outlet, hospital, or foreign government has confirmed or denied Xi's medical status beyond the published itinerary. Whether Xi's expected Washington visit, described by Kritenbrink as roughly two weeks out from the summit, proceeds as planned may be the clearest real-world test of whether the stroke claim holds any weight.
