Vita Vea Requests Trade From Buccaneers Day Before Training Camp Opens

Vita Vea picked a hell of a time to make a statement.

The Buccaneers' two-time Pro Bowl nose tackle requested a trade Monday, the day before Tampa Bay's veterans report for training camp, according to ESPN, which first reported the request through Vea's agent Collin Roberts. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport confirmed the request the same day, and Fox Sports' Greg Auman reported Vea still plans to show up for camp Tuesday rather than stage a full holdout.

Vea is entering the final year of the four-year, $73 million extension he signed in 2022, according to Fox Sports. He's set to make $18 million in 2026, per NFL Network, none of it guaranteed beyond a per-game roster bonus capped at $1 million, according to the New York Post. That's a lot of money on paper and zero security in practice for a 29-year-old defensive tackle whose body of work says he's worth more.

Fox Sports' Greg Auman says he's currently the 19th-highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the league. Only four players ranked ahead of him are older, according to the same reporting. Vea doesn't think he's the 19th-best.

Since becoming a full-time starter in 2019, Vea has anchored one of the NFL's best run defenses. Tampa Bay ranked first in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (94.1) and yards per carry (4.0) from 2019 through most of 2024, according to Fox News. Fox Sports pegs the Bucs' rush defense at 92.58 yards allowed per game during that broader stretch, with three straight top-three total defense finishes from 2019-21.

Through eight seasons, Vea has 256 tackles, 35 sacks and three forced fumbles across 112 games, per Fox Sports. He was part of the Super Bowl LV team that shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Last season he played all 17 games, finishing with 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and 34 tackles, according to the New York Post. NFL Network's Nick Shook noted Vea earned the 20th-best overall grade among interior defensive linemen in 2025 per Pro Football Focus, with a top-12 pass-rushing grade, even though his run-stop numbers dipped to 21 stops on 248 snaps, comparable to players like Kenny Clark and Neville Gallimore.

Tampa Bay isn't obligated to trade him, and a league source told Fox News Digital the team isn't going to hold a fire sale just to avoid a distraction. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles downplayed the situation during mandatory minicamp last month, telling reporters contract negotiations are just part of the business, according to the New York Post.

But the front office, led by general manager Jason Licht, now has two unresolved money fights on its hands heading into camp. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is entering the final year of his $100 million contract, and Licht's staff failed to get an extension done before Mayfield's self-imposed deadline at the start of camp, according to NFL Network. Garafolo reported earlier in July that Tampa Bay wasn't close on extensions for either Mayfield or Vea. Add Vea's trade request, and this camp opens with the roster's two most important non-negotiable pieces both unhappy.

If Tampa Bay does move Vea, Fox Sports reports his preferred destination is the West Coast, with The Athletic indicating he wants a return to California or a trade to the Las Vegas Raiders. Vea starred at the University of Washington before Tampa Bay drafted him 12th overall in 2018.

What happens to the Buccaneers' defensive line without him doesn't look promising on paper. The New York Post lists the next five up front as Calijah Kancey, A'Shawn Robinson, Elijah Roberts, rookie DeMonte Capehart and veteran Rakeem Nunez-Roches. None of them has more than 15 career sacks. Replacing a 347-pound nose tackle who eats double-teams for a living isn't something you do with a waiver claim.

Fox Sports floated one recent comparison worth watching: the Jets trading Quinnen Williams to the Cowboys ahead of the 2025 deadline. If Tampa Bay decides Vea's number is too high to meet, that's roughly the kind of return they'd be hoping for.

For now, nothing is finalized. Vea is under contract, he's expected in Tampa on Tuesday, and no trade has been reported. The open question is whether Licht bends on money for a 29-year-old at a physically punishing position, or calls Vea's bluff and lets him play out the season making $18 million with a chip on his shoulder.
