Trump Says He Will Create an 'AI Force' and Name an 'AI Czar', No Details Released Yet

What Trump actually announced

President Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday that he's creating an "AI Force" and will name an "AI Czar" soon. No executive order. No legislation. No org chart. No named appointee.

"For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term," Trump wrote, according to CNN and multiple other outlets that reviewed the post. He added that "Only High I.Q. individuals need apply" for the czar job.

Trump described his approach as hands-off: "We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows!" He said the government would still go after "BAD" actors using "our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System" — meaning no new regulatory framework, just enforcement of laws already on the books, per his own words as quoted by Fox 5 DC, KTTV Fox 11, FOX 26 Houston and Channel NewsAsia, all of which ran identical Reuters-sourced accounts of the post.

The Space Force comparison has a problem

Trump's model for the AI Force is Space Force, the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces. But Space Force wasn't created by a presidential Truth Social post. It was established in December 2019 through the National Defense Authorization Act, an act of Congress.

Trump's announcement doesn't say whether the AI Force is meant to be a military branch, a civilian oversight office, or something else entirely. If it's meant to be a formal armed service like Space Force, it would need congressional authorization, not just a presidential declaration. Neither CNN nor the BBC nor any other outlet reviewed for this story reported that Trump has proposed legislation to that effect.

"Hoax Buster"

The AI Force announcement didn't happen in a vacuum. Days earlier, Trump had escalated his attacks on AI safety advocates, calling fears about the technology a "hoax" and grouping them with what he's previously labeled hoaxes: Russia interference allegations, global warming, and his two impeachments, according to the BBC.

"There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China," Trump wrote, per the BBC's reporting. He also called himself "the Hoax Buster" and said the only guardrail AI needs is "a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT."

Axios framed this as Trump making the AI safety debate personal, noting he's "rewriting a complex, years-long debate over AI's dangers in the partisan grammar that has defined MAGA for a decade." Axios also reported that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took a live call from Trump during an interview at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, underscoring how tightly Trump has aligned himself with industry leaders even as some of those same companies raise safety concerns.

Trump's own industry isn't unified behind his "hoax" framing. Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, told the BBC that a mandatory "kill switch" verifiable by a third party may be needed industry-wide, and said "most labs have different ways of being able to pull the plug" already. Microsoft AI has reportedly been discussing limits on its own models under a framework it calls "humanist AI," per the BBC.

Democrats want more regulation, not less

On the other side, CNN reported that former President Barack Obama urged Democratic 2028 hopefuls to make AI regulation central to their platforms. "Government has to be regulating this," Obama said Friday at Colgate University, according to excerpts obtained by CNN. He specifically pushed back on the idea that AI companies alone should decide how fast to move.

UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds took a middle position, telling the BBC "there are risks but, let's be frank, there are some tremendous upsides," while cautioning against complacency.

What's actually new here, and what isn't

This isn't Trump's first AI move. He signed an executive order in January 2025 aimed at "sustaining and enhancing America's AI dominance," and stood behind the Stargate data-center venture with OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle, reportedly valued at up to $500 billion. David Sacks has served as Trump's tech adviser in an AI-czar-like capacity, but it's unclear whether the new czar post Trump described is the same role, a successor, or something new. No source reviewed for this story identifies who Trump is considering.

One wrinkle in the coverage: several outlets, including The Daily Guardian, ran the identical two-paragraph Reuters wire dispatch verbatim, meaning what looks like broad coverage is largely one underlying report repeated. Trump's 25%-of-GDP prediction for AI is his own projection, not a figure from any economic agency or independent forecaster cited in reporting reviewed here.

The open question is whether "AI Force" ends up as a military branch requiring congressional approval, a civilian office Trump can stand up on his own authority, or mostly a branding exercise layered on enforcement powers the government already has. Trump hasn't said, and as of publication no legislative text or executive order has surfaced to clarify it.
