Trump Renews Push to Kill Senate Filibuster for SAVE Act, Then Fires 18 Posts in Three Minutes, 12 of Them About Elizabeth Warren

President Trump used his Truth Social account late Saturday night to renew a demand he's made for months: kill the Senate filibuster.

"The all Republican Senators! Terminate the Filibuster, which the Dumocrats will do as soon as they get the chance, and PASS THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, and everything else, including the Budget, and upcoming Debt Ceiling. Do it now, before it is too late!!!" Trump wrote at 11:48 p.m., according to Just The News.

The SAVE Act, formally the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require voters to provide documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections. Trump has pushed the bill for months as a priority alongside the budget and an approaching debt ceiling deadline, both of which he also wants passed without a 60-vote threshold in the Senate.

Trump's argument for nuking the filibuster is consistent: he has argued that Democrats will terminate it themselves if they regain control of the Senate, so Republicans should move first.

Then Came the Warren Barrage

Hours after that post, at 5:23 a.m. Sunday, Trump began firing off a rapid sequence of Truth Social posts, 18 in roughly three minutes according to the Irish Star. Twelve of them mentioned Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The posts were screenshots lifted from an X thread originally posted Thursday by Utah Sen. Mike Lee, republished by Trump in reverse order from how Lee had posted them. Several of the screenshots were republished multiple times.

Lee's original thread went after Warren's stated reasoning for opposing the SAVE Act. In the clip Lee posted, Warren told an interviewer: "It is already illegal for someone who is not an American citizen to vote, period. There are already laws to prevent that and people have violated the law and they should be prosecuted, easy. I don't understand why you want laws that are already there, that makes no sense."

Lee then framed Warren's position as a broader pattern of logic and applied it to other areas: "Elizabeth Warren's logic applied to gun-control laws: 'Gun violence is already illegal. We don't need another law to deter gun violence,'" he wrote, pairing the point with AI-generated cartoon images of Warren holding rifles. He extended the same framing to campaign-finance law ("bribery is already illegal"), environmental law ("poisoning people is already illegal"), and civil rights law ("it's already illegal to beat someone up").

The Actual Policy Argument, Stripped of the Theatrics

Warren's underlying point is that noncitizen voting is already illegal, and that people who violate that law should be prosecuted, so a new documentary-proof-of-citizenship mandate is redundant.

Lee's rebuttal, laid out later in his thread, is that the existing prohibition "has proven nearly impossible to enforce," and that's precisely why he argues the SAVE Act is necessary even though noncitizen voting is already against the law.

None of that exchange survived the delivery. Instead of a policy debate conducted in good faith, the public got a president reposting cartoon gun images of a sitting senator at dawn, twelve times over, stripped of the argument's actual substance.

Whether Trump's posting pattern shifts the underlying debate over the SAVE Act, the filibuster, or the coming budget and debt-ceiling fights remains to be seen.
