Sam Altman Calls AI Compute Spending 'Unsustainable Silliness.' Traders Are Already Picking Winners and Losers.

Sam Altman Calls AI Compute Spending 'Unsustainable Silliness.' Traders Are Already Picking Winners and Losers.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the Sources podcast he sees early signs of a bubble in AI data center spending, warning that new "neocloud" operators are promising compute they don't have revenue or buyers for. He exempted his own company from the warning. Traders are now sorting names like CoreWeave and Nebius, which have massive signed contracts, from Bitcoin-miners-turned-AI-plays like Cipher Mining that are leaning harder on debt.

Sam Altman just told the rest of the AI industry it's building on sand.

Speaking on the "Sources" podcast, the OpenAI CEO said he's seeing "the first signs of what feels to me like unsustainable silliness of random new neoclouds popping up, people claiming that they're going to build gigantic amounts of compute next year that I think they don't have the revenue to support or a buyer," according to Benzinga's reporting on the appearance.

Altman didn't name a single public company, but he drew a hard line between his own operation and everybody else's.

"I'm not worried about our compute buildout plans," he said, per Benzinga. "I think we are going to be able to use all of the compute very profitably that we were planning to build." On the rest of the market: "I am worried about the world's compute buildout plans."

He also described the mindset driving the spending spree. "I think people right now are kind of in a 'cost is no object' mode," Altman said. "We're just going to build out crazy amounts of compute and somebody will pay an even higher price for it." And he floated what happens if OpenAI succeeds in driving compute costs down: "You can imagine a world where there are some people that made dumb financial decisions. That happens in every boom."

Who Traders Are Watching

Altman named no tickers. Traders filled in the blanks anyway. According to 24/7 Wall St and Yahoo Finance, the names getting scrutinized include CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS), IREN Ltd. (NASDAQ: IREN), Hut 8 (NASDAQ: HUT), Bitdeer Technologies (NASDAQ: BTDR) and Cipher Mining (NASDAQ: CIFR). Several of these are former Bitcoin mining operations that have pivoted their power infrastructure toward AI and high-performance computing.

Measured against Altman's own standard of revenue or a buyer, the disclosures are a mixed bag.

CoreWeave reported a revenue backlog of roughly $104 billion as of June 30, 2026, plus more than $25 billion in net new customer commitments added in early Q3, according to 24/7 Wall St. CEO Mike Intrator said on the company's earnings call that "demand continues to exceed supply across sectors, geographies, and generations of infrastructure."

Nebius disclosed remaining performance obligations of $37.5 billion. But three customers accounted for 24%, 21% and 14% of its Q2 2026 revenue, per 24/7 Wall St. More than half its business rides on three counterparties.

IREN, which is transitioning from Bitcoin mining into AI cloud services for clients including Microsoft, Cohere, Perplexity and Figure AI, says $4 billion in annual recurring revenue is contracted for its 2026 capacity, with $1 billion of that already operating. Hut 8 disclosed 949 megawatts of contracted IT capacity worth roughly $26.6 billion in expected aggregate base-term contract value. Bitdeer signed a $4.70 billion, 16-year colocation lease with AI lab Volta at its Tydal, Norway facility for 121 IT megawatts.

Cipher Mining's contracted portfolio targets about $793 million in average annualized net operating income over its base lease terms, according to 24/7 Wall St. Yahoo Finance and AOL both flagged a separate leverage concern: Cipher is carrying roughly $6 billion in debt against $562 million in equity, a ratio that puts it closer to the speculative end of the spectrum Altman described.

The Case for Taking Altman Seriously, and the Case Against

The skeptical read is straightforward. Altman is describing an industry where companies are ordering chips and building data centers on the bet that demand will show up later, financed increasingly by debt rather than signed contracts. If that demand doesn't materialize, or if OpenAI itself succeeds in slashing compute costs the way Altman says it's trying to, the operators sitting on the thinnest contract coverage and the heaviest leverage are the ones left holding the bag.

The more skeptical counterpoint, not made by Altman but obvious from his position, is that the CEO of the single largest buyer of AI compute has an interest in talking down competitors' valuations and cost structures while insisting his own buildout is different. Nothing in the sourcing here shows Altman naming a specific company as reckless, and OpenAI's own compute commitments, which have driven much of the demand for CoreWeave and Nebius in the first place, are not detailed in his remarks.

What's verifiable is the disclosure gap. CoreWeave, Nebius, IREN, Hut 8 and Bitdeer have all put specific contracted-revenue figures on the record. Cipher Mining has too, but its debt-to-equity picture is the one Altman's framework would flag hardest. None of the six companies has publicly responded to Altman's comments as of this writing, and no analyst downgrade or regulatory action has followed. The open question is whether Altman's own compute-cost-cutting efforts at OpenAI, which he says are underway, end up being the thing that tests his prediction.
