Russell Brand convicted of rape and three sexual assaults, jailed on remand until Monday sentencing

A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London convicted Russell Brand on Thursday, Nov. 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The verdicts involve four women and conduct between 2004 and 2009.
The jury of eight men and four women also found him not guilty of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. They deliberated about eight and a half hours over two days. The trial began Oct. 12.
Brand is 51. He was taken into custody after the verdicts, and the judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, refused bail over the possibility that he might flee. Sentencing is set for Monday, Nov. 9. The maximum sentence for rape in the UK is life imprisonment.
What the jury decided
The rape conviction concerns a fan Brand met after a 2009 stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo.
The three sexual assault convictions:
- groping an MTV worker at a Soho bar party in 2004
- kissing and groping a Choice FM worker at the Capital Radio building in 2004 or 2005
- assaulting a Channel 4 worker in 2009 after she was made to give him a massage
The jury cleared him of raping the MTV worker in a toilet in the Soho bar incident. It also cleared him of raping a woman he met at a cabaret show on the fringes of the 1999 Labour Party conference in Bournemouth. And it cleared him of trying to drag an MTV worker into a toilet in 2001.
Six women testified about events spanning 1999 to 2009, a decade in which Brand rose from stand-up comedy to MTV, a BBC radio show and Hollywood films.
The defense
Brand denied every charge. He testified that he was obsessed with sex as a young man and led a promiscuous life, but had never forced anyone to do anything against their will. He told the court consent was more important than sex itself.
His barrister, Ian Winter KC, told jurors in closing: "It is not criminal to treat women unkindly before, during or after sex. It is not, I am afraid, criminal to be disrespectful or rude or to act like a crazy idiot." He also said that of the many women Brand slept with during the period, only three complained that they had not consented.
Winter argued the women came forward because of the 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches investigation, which he said had "poisoned the well of justice." Brand's lawyers also pointed out that the women went to police years after the alleged assaults.
A former friend, Mark Pinheiro, testified that Brand once spoke of an ambition to sleep with 5,000 women. Brand denied it on the stand: "No, not a goal." Brand said friends and colleagues had abandoned him and that no one with relevant evidence would testify for him. His wife, Laura, took the stand as a character witness.
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told the jury the women had "no benefit" to gain from testifying "apart from perhaps some closure." She called Brand a ruthless, calculating, manipulative "sexual predator." The jury's split verdict, with acquittals on three counts, shows it weighed the counts separately.
More cases coming
The Met says Brand has been interviewed under caution over two further rape allegations from two women. A spokesperson said files have been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for both complainants and that detectives remain in close contact with prosecutors.
Pre-trial legal documents suggested outstanding charges involving a woman who alleged in the 2023 Dispatches documentary that he groomed her when she was 16. Det Supt Andy Furphy would not comment on any outstanding inquiries. In an April 2026 interview, Brand admitted having sex with a 16-year-old when he was, in his words, "an immature 30-year-old."
Brand also faces a civil claim in the High Court in London. It alleges he sexually assaulted a woman at his Los Angeles mansion in 2008. The claim is an allegation and has not been tested in court.
Furphy, the Met's strategic lead on the case, called Brand "a predator" whose behavior escalated as his fame grew. "Our work's not done," he said, and urged other potential victims to come forward. The investigation, Operation Actinolite, involved more than 100 witnesses, 1,400 documents and 340 statements.
Senior prosecutor David Roberts said outside court that Brand "used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes."
From the BBC to Florida
Brand left mainstream media and moved to Florida. He built a big online following with videos mixing wellness, conspiracy theories and his religious devotion. That audience, much of it drawn from outside the British entertainment world, is now watching a man who spent years casting himself as a victim of a media conspiracy lose a jury trial on the central charge.
The verdict covers four counts. Brand has not been convicted of anything in the further rape allegations or the civil claim, and he is entitled to contest them.
Bennathan told Brand to expect "a significant custodial term." Addressing the effect on Brand's children, the judge said: "I regret the hardship caused to the children, of course. But the hardship has been caused by serious criminal offending by their father."
The next fixed date is Monday. After that, the CPS has to decide whether to charge Brand on the two further rape complaints already in its hands.
