OpenAI Buys Its Fourth Startup Team of the Year While Its Safety Team Quietly Vanishes
OpenAI announced August 22 it acquired the InstantDB team, its fourth known acquisition in under a year covering AI coding, desktop assistants, presentations and now databases. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported OpenAI disbanded its dedicated preparedness team in July, weeks before OpenAI itself flagged a model's cyber capabilities as hitting a critical risk threshold. OpenAI disputes the word disbanded but confirms the restructuring the FT described.

OpenAI announced on August 22 that it has acquired the team behind InstantDB, a real-time database and backend platform used by more than 17,000 developers to power roughly 400,000 applications, according to Crypto Briefing. No financial terms were disclosed. It's the company's latest bolt-on buy as it races to own more of the infrastructure developers use to build AI agents.

InstantDB started as a 2021 idea, went through Y Combinator in 2022, and processed about 2.5 billion transactions over its lifetime. Existing customers now face a migration deadline: new signups are already halted, refunds are available for billing after July 31, 2026, hosted apps keep running until August 31, 2027, and backups stay accessible until 2028. The open-source codebase will remain available for anyone who wants to self-host.

This is not an isolated deal. OpenAI acquired Software Applications Incorporated, maker of the Mac assistant Sky, back on October 23, 2025, folding its desktop integration into ChatGPT. TechCrunch reported on August 8 that OpenAI had also quietly closed on NextSlide, a prompt-to-presentation startup founded by Ahmed Beshry, months before the deal became public. Beshry previously sold his last company, Caper AI, to Instacart for $350 million in 2021. Add InstantDB, and OpenAI has picked up specialized product teams in desktop control, presentations, and now real-time databases in under a year. Each one slots into a specific gap in ChatGPT and its developer tools like Codex.

That expansion is happening at the same time OpenAI has been dismantling the internal structure built to catch the risks that expansion creates.
