NATO Jet Shoots Down Fourth Suspected Russian Drone Over Romania in 2026

A NATO F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone over Romania at 5:01 a.m. Sunday, the fourth drone NATO or Romanian forces have destroyed over the country so far this year, according to Romania's Ministry of National Defence.

Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruța said two Spanish F-18s were scrambled after radar picked up the drone entering Romanian airspace at 4:44 a.m. near the border with Moldova, about 24 kilometers north of Galați. The jets tracked it, got clearance to engage, and shot it down between the villages of Băleni and Cudalbi, an unpopulated stretch of Galați County, according to UPI and POLITICO.

"Romania is defending its airspace, and our allies are standing with us," Miruța wrote on X, adding that "vigilance, rapid response, and allied solidarity" are the country's concrete security guarantees.

Romania's defense ministry has not said where the drone came from. NATO has been less careful about hedging. Colonel Martin O'Donnell, a spokesman for NATO military headquarters, told The Independent and POLITICO that "additional details regarding Sunday's incident remain under investigation, but the drone appears to be Russian." No forensic identification of the wreckage has been publicly announced.

A pattern, not an isolated incident

This is not Romania's first rodeo this year. In July, Romanian F-16 pilots shot down three Russian drones that breached national airspace, the first such interceptions after what POLITICO describes as "dozens" of incursions since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In May, a drone crashed into an apartment building in Galați during an overnight Russian strike on Ukraine, injuring two people, according to both The Independent and POLITICO.

Breitbart's coverage of the July incident adds detail the other outlets skip over: two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons and a Romanian Puma helicopter were also scrambled alongside the F-16s, and Romania's Deputy Commander of the Joint Forces Command, Gheorghe Maxim, laid out the rules of engagement publicly. Maxim said crews visually identify targets before engaging and only fire "in areas where there is no danger to the population." Romanian officials, per Breitbart, also had to knock down rumors that the July drone had overflown a nuclear plant or was heading for a military base before it was shot down.

The Epoch Times reported a separate incident on Aug. 11, when Romanian naval divers destroyed two Gerbera-model drones floating in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep gas project, roughly 90 nautical miles off Constanța. The drones may have carried explosives. Romania's defense ministry said it contacted Kyiv, which confirmed the drones weren't Ukrainian, but Bucharest again stopped short of blaming Moscow directly. Gerbera drones are Russian-made decoys designed to draw fire away from more lethal weapons, according to the U.S. Army's ODIN database, cited by the Epoch Times.

Romania's response so far

Bucharest summoned Russia's ambassador, Vladimir Lipaev, and demanded his expulsion on July 27 after determining an earlier drone was Russian-made, according to the Epoch Times and the Mirror. Romania has also been building fallout shelters near the Ukrainian border and continuing to collect drone debris for analysis, per the Mirror.

The Mirror also flags something the other outlets underplay: this particular drone reportedly overflew Moldova, a non-NATO country, before crossing into Romanian airspace, a routing that's "unusual" compared to prior incursions. If confirmed, that raises questions about whether Russian drone operators are deliberately threading a path through non-NATO territory to complicate interception decisions, though no source here confirms intent.

What's actually proven versus assumed

What's confirmed: a drone crossed into Romanian airspace from Moldova, NATO jets tracked and destroyed it, and this is the fourth such shootdown in Romania in 2026. What's alleged but unconfirmed: that this or prior drones were Russian in origin. NATO's O'Donnell has said as much, but Romania's own defense ministry has consistently declined to make that call publicly, likely because forensic confirmation from wreckage takes time and Bucharest doesn't want to overstate an accusation against a nuclear-armed adversary without proof.

That caution is reasonable. It's also true that four incursions in under eight months, plus floating mines and drones near a soon-to-launch gas field expected to make Romania the EU's largest gas producer by 2027, is a pattern that looks less like accident and more like probing, whether or not Moscow ever admits it.

Investigators are still examining the wreckage from Sunday's shootdown. Whether that debris yields a definitive Russian identification, and whether NATO changes its air-policing posture along the Romanian-Moldovan border in response, remains unresolved.
