Lions' Jack Campbell Says He Has Full Lower-Body Movement and Is Improving Upper-Body Movement After Neck Injury

Lions' Jack Campbell Says He Has Full Lower-Body Movement and Is Improving Upper-Body Movement After Neck Injury
Four days after being carted off at Ford Field, Detroit linebacker Jack Campbell said in a statement Wednesday, Nov. 4, that he has full movement in his lower body and is making progress in his upper body. The Lions have not released medical details or any timeline for his return.

Since Campbell was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field in Detroit's 19-15 win over Minnesota on Sunday, Nov. 1, the Lions have given only sparse updates. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the player gave one himself.

"I'm incredibly encouraged by the progress I've made in such a short period of time," Campbell said in a statement released by the team. "I have full movement in my lower body, and I'm continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body. I know there's still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic."

He added: "I'm taking things one day at a time, staying positive, and focusing on getting better."

What happened on the field

Campbell went down early in the fourth quarter while tackling Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson. He went limp and landed face down on the turf.

Medical staff worked on the fourth-year linebacker and 2025 Pro Bowl selection for almost 10 minutes. They then put him on a backboard and carted him off. He was breathing and alert when he left for the hospital.

On Monday, the Lions said preliminary indications about his condition were positive. The team declined to give further medical details out of respect for Campbell and his family. That remains the case: the team has not said what the injury is, what treatment he is receiving or when he might be discharged.

Campbell thanks the medical staff

In his statement, Campbell thanked the athletic trainers and medical personnel who treated him on the field. "I know those were difficult moments, and I'm incredibly grateful for the professionalism, compassion, and care you showed me," he said.

He also praised the doctors at Henry Ford Hospital and the Lions medical staff. "They've been amazing to me and my family throughout this process," he said.

"My faith in God has never been stronger," Campbell wrote. "I know He has a plan for me, and I trust in that plan."

Coach and teammates react

Head coach Dan Campbell, who is not related to the player, spoke at a previously scheduled news conference. He said hearing from the linebacker directly carried more weight than any team update.

"That's powerful in itself, more than hearing it from me or anybody else," the coach said. "At this point that's all you're looking for is just to know that he is improving."

Quarterback Jared Goff spoke Tuesday on 97.1 The Ticket, the team's flagship station. "There were a lot of injuries that affected a lot of guys' seasons, but certainly the one that's scariest is Jack's," Goff said. He called the positive updates "great."

Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, 27, addressed the injury on his podcast. He said he does not know more about Campbell's condition than the public does. His thoughts, he said, went straight to Campbell's family.

"All I keep thinking about is his wife and his newborn baby that he just had, what, a few months ago," St. Brown said. "I just want him to be OK, to be able to play with his kid honestly and be normal."

St. Brown said it was hard to go back out and play after watching trainers load a teammate onto a stretcher. He also accepted the realities of the job. "It's what we signed up for," he said. "We get paid a lot of money to play this sport that we love. And so, we've gotta finish the game."

A defense that left hurt

Campbell was not the only Lions defender to leave hurt. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson said the game left him drained, citing Campbell's injury along with D.J. Wonnum leaving on a cart and Brian Branch also going down.

"So much stuff happened on defense where it was just a lot to process," Hutchinson said. "A lot of stuff is still up in the air right now."

Hutchinson said the team's attention would turn to its first- and second-down game plan for Miami, its next opponent. The Lions have not detailed the status of Wonnum or Branch in the material released so far.

What remains unknown

Campbell's own statement is the most specific account of his condition to date. It describes movement and progress. It does not name a diagnosis or a prognosis, and the Lions have not announced whether he will need surgery or how long he will remain hospitalized.

No return-to-play timeline exists. The next formal word will come from the team, which has said it is withholding further medical details out of respect for Campbell and his family.
