Halloween Weekend Shootings Leave at Least 6 Dead and Dozens Wounded Across U.S. Nightlife Districts

At least six people were killed and dozens wounded in shootings in crowded nightlife districts and college-town party zones across the country over Halloween weekend, which ran from Friday, Oct. 30 through early Sunday, Nov. 1.
Dallas took the worst of it.
Dallas: four dead in Deep Ellum
Four people died and 15 were injured in Deep Ellum, the city's music, restaurant and nightlife district, on Saturday night, Oct. 31. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said three separate shootings took place over about an hour and 15 minutes.
Investigators have not determined whether the shootings were related. Comeaux said it wasn't immediately known why they started.
Some arrests were made. Comeaux did not say how many people were taken into custody or what charges they face.
"This is a really big scene. It's spread out," Comeaux said. "We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into all the shootings out here."
The department had increased its police presence in the district before the shootings. No officers were hurt.
Birmingham: gunfire after the Magic City Classic
One person was killed and eight wounded just outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after the Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Alabama A&M won 31-28 before nearly 70,000 fans.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already left the stadium property. The shooting happened nearby along Graymont Avenue, where vendors had set up.
Pickett said he was "very grateful that more people weren't injured."
Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, and that "multiple weapons" were found and secured. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear.
Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Arkansas and Colorado
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot on Main Street near the University of Delaware campus shortly after 11:10 p.m. Saturday, Newark police Lt. Greg D'Elia said. All six were taken to hospitals. No condition updates had been released as of Sunday afternoon.
A stretch of Main Street was closed for several hours. Video from the scene shows people running for safety. The university's director of media relations, Peter Bothum, said the school is "deeply concerned" and will post confirmed information on a dedicated alerts page. President Laura Carlson said victims were receiving care and thanked Newark police, campus police and other first responders.
In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting early Sunday near Illinois Wesleyan University killed a 19-year-old woman and left another woman in critical condition. Six others had injuries that were not life-threatening. A statement from the city's police department and the McLean County coroner's office did not make clear whether all of those six had gunshot wounds.
In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to hospitals after a shooting in the city's nightlife district.
In Bloomington, Indiana, near Indiana University's homecoming crowd, officers monitoring a large gathering around Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street heard shots around 1:30 a.m. ET Sunday. They saw a man with a firearm running from the area and took him into custody near Dunn Meadow. Police recovered a gun and shell casings.
Bloomington police said it remains unclear whether the man fired any shots. No deaths were reported there, and police said they did not know whether there were additional victims. A disturbance in the crowd may have come before the gunfire, police said. Fox News reported seven people were hospitalized.
Fox News also reported a shooting in Boulder, Colorado, that left a University of Colorado Boulder student dead and another critically injured. That would put the weekend's death toll at seven, depending on how the incidents are counted.
These were not one coordinated event. They were separate shootings in different states, at different kinds of gatherings: a nightlife strip, a football-game vendor area, college-town streets. Police have so far described no common thread beyond large late-night crowds.
Dallas is the case with the clearest open question. Police had added officers to Deep Ellum ahead of the night, and three shootings still happened in just over an hour.
The next developments are concrete. Dallas police have yet to say how many people were arrested, on what charges, and whether the three shootings were linked. Birmingham police have one person detained and multiple weapons recovered, with no stated motive. Delaware's six victims have no public condition updates, and the University of Delaware says it will post information as the investigation moves forward.
