Gemini Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users, Google Says, Following ChatGPT's Milestone by About Two Months

Gemini Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users, Google Says, Following ChatGPT's Milestone by About Two Months
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced Tuesday that the Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, calling it Google's fastest-growing product ever. That's real scale, but the number is company-reported with no independent audit, and it says nothing about how many of those users actually pay for anything.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced Tuesday that Gemini has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, making it the 14th Google product to hit that mark and, according to Pichai, the fastest-growing product in company history.

Pichai posted the news on X. Google backed it up with a blog post crediting Josh Woodward, the VP who runs Google Labs, the Gemini app, and AI Studio.

The growth curve is steep by Google's own numbers. Gemini had 400 million monthly users at Google I/O in May 2025. That grew to over 650 million by Alphabet's third-quarter 2025 earnings report on October 29, 2025, according to unite.ai. Pichai cited over 900 million users at I/O 2026 in May. Alphabet's second-quarter 2026 earnings, filed July 22, 2026, put the figure at 950 million. Tuesday's announcement means Google added roughly 50 million users in about three weeks, and 600 million in fifteen months.

How people actually use it

Google says 63% of Gemini users now talk to the assistant by voice instead of typing, and that busy parents are 43% more likely than other users to rely on voice for everyday tasks. One in five Gemini Live sessions involves screen sharing or a live camera feed, features Google says are popular with DIYers and students working through real-world problems.

On the education side, 38% of school-related requests include an attachment, according to Google, and the company says new study tools are coming in the next few weeks. Small businesses are leaning on Gemini's image and video generation, part of the 150 million images the app now produces daily, all tagged with Google's SynthID watermark.

Android integration is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Gemini can automate tasks across more than 40 apps, and it comes preinstalled on most Android phones, which is a structural advantage no other chatbot has. Even so, Google says more than 100 million of Gemini's monthly users are on iOS, a platform where users have to go out of their way to download the app instead of defaulting to Apple's own tools or ChatGPT. Woodward noted macOS power users prompt roughly twice as often as users on other platforms.

Where Gemini stands next to ChatGPT

OpenAI's ChatGPT got to 1 billion monthly users first. Forbes reported ChatGPT crossed the threshold in May, while The Verge reported OpenAI didn't announce it until August 6, when the company buried the figure inside a broader blog post about AI usage patterns. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum told The Verge that ChatGPT hit 1 billion weekly users in July, but declined to say how many monthly users the app has now.

That's a meaningful gap in the record. ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly users back in February. Going from 900 million weekly to 1 billion weekly over five months is a real slowdown for a product that spent years being called the fastest-growing software ever, as The Verge pointed out. Anthropic's Claude, meanwhile, isn't playing the same numbers game. Forbes cited Reuters reporting that Claude had 56 million global monthly users in the second quarter of 2026, up 640% year-over-year, but Anthropic doesn't disclose active-user counts the way Google and OpenAI do.

None of this is independently audited. Pichai's post and Google's blog are the only sources for the number, and there's no way to verify it against outside data the way researchers sometimes estimate traffic for other platforms. Monthly active users is also a low bar. Anyone who opened the Gemini app once in the past 30 days counts, whether they used it for five minutes or five hours.

Thurrott.com raised the more pointed question: Google's announcement says nothing about how many of those billion users actually pay for Gemini. Neither does Google break out AI revenue in its earnings reports, according to Ars Technica, even as the company's infrastructure spending on AI has pushed its cash flow negative for the first time in its history.

Google shares fell 3.4% Tuesday to $343.89, according to Forbes, part of an 8.4% slide over the prior five trading sessions, though the stock remains up 9.6% for the year. Google is set to hold its Made by Google 2026 hardware event Wednesday, where Woodward has said more Gemini-Android integrations are coming. OpenAI is reportedly developing its own hardware device, according to aiweekly.co's sourcing on TechCrunch reporting, setting up the next phase of the fight over chatbot-native devices rather than just chatbot user counts.
