Claude AI's 'Shareable' Chats and Artifacts Were Showing Up in Google Search Results

Anyone could click through and read them. No login required. The thread drew thousands of upvotes, according to VentureBeat, and sparked a parallel firestorm on X. People started digging and found more than embarrassing chatbot small talk. Exposed material reportedly included cryptocurrency wallet creation details, résumés, legal questions, internal business discussions, and according to 404 Media, private crypto wallet keys, API keys, login credentials, names, addresses, and phone numbers. It wasn't just conversations. Claude's "Artifacts" feature, which lets users build and share interactive apps, dashboards, and documents, was also getting swept into Google's index. 404 Media reported finding an AI-built therapy app, meeting notes, and a dashboard someone built to analyze medical billing data, all sitting in public search results. VentureBeat said it independently verified that Artifacts not shared directly with its reporters were searchable and accessible via Google, though it could not access any exposed conversations itself. On July 26, Om Patel, founder of research firm BigIdeasDB, posted on X that a separate search query, `site:claude.ai/public/artifacts`, was surfacing shared apps, dashboards, reports, and what looked like internal business proposal documents.

Anthropic and Google moved fast, but not instantly

By Sunday morning, July 26, many of the original search results for shared Claude conversations had disappeared or become much harder to find, according to VentureBeat, suggesting either Anthropic or Google, or both, started taking action. ZDNET reported the same pattern: the Google dork that started the whole mess stopped working not long after the Reddit thread took off. 404 Media tested the original conversation-exposing search on both Google and DuckDuckGo and got zero results. But the Artifacts search dork was, as of their reporting, still working. Anthropic has not responded to requests for comment from VentureBeat or 404 Media as of this writing.

Is this a bug, or is this just how sharing works?

Claude does not make conversations shareable by default. A user has to go into settings, actively choose to generate a share link, and click through multiple warning dialogs telling them the link will be accessible to anyone who has it, according to VentureBeat's reporting. That's functionally identical to sharing a Google Doc link set to "anyone with the link can view." If you hand that link to five people and one posts it on a public forum, or if Google's crawler simply finds it because it's a live, unauthenticated public URL, that's not a hack. It's the intended behavior of a public link working exactly as designed. ZDNET makes a similar point: Claude chats are private by default, and nothing is exposed unless a user intentionally creates a shareable link. But intent isn't the same as expectation. Most people creating a share link to send to one coworker or one friend do not expect that link to end up indexed by Google Search and discoverable by strangers running generic searches. There was apparently no guardrail stopping mass indexing once a link went live, which ZDNET flagged directly as a gap that "should not have existed in the first place." That's a design failure independent of whether the user technically consented to sharing.

This has happened before, to other chatbots

This is not Claude's first brush with this exact problem, and it's not the industry's either. 404 Media noted that OpenAI's ChatGPT had a nearly identical exposure last year, when close to 100,000 ChatGPT conversations turned up searchable on Google. A researcher reportedly scraped those exposed chats at the time, meaning even after OpenAI and Google cleaned up the search index, the underlying data was already out in the wild through third-party archives. Forbes reported a similar Claude exposure incident last year as well, according to 404 Media. If someone scraped the exposed Claude links before they vanished from Google, that data exists somewhere now, outside Anthropic's control. That won't be fixed by de-indexing pages, regardless of what happens to the search results going forward.

What users can do right now

Anthropic users can check exposure by going to Settings, then Privacy, then Shared Chats, then Manage, according to ZDNET. Any active sharing link can be disabled from there. The open question is whether Anthropic will now build an actual guardrail, like a `noindex` tag or robots.txt exclusion applied automatically to all `/share` and `/public/artifacts` URLs, rather than relying on users to remember to lock down links after the fact. Neither Anthropic's public statements nor its response to reporters has addressed that as of this writing.
