Bill Maher Said What Most Democrats Won't

Bill Maher used his May 9, 2025 closing monologue on HBO's Real Time to challenge the Democratic Party — his own party — over its failure to confront antisemitism.

"If the thought leaders in the Democratic Party keep encouraging and not rebuking that America is cringe and the people who run Gaza are great, the Democrats are doomed," Maher said, according to Fox News and CBN News.

The Specific Charges Maher Laid Out

Maher didn't traffic in vague generalities. He went after specific people and outlets.

He cited an editor at The American Prospect — a venerable liberal publication that launched careers including Ezra Klein's — who reportedly said Israel is "a brainwashed psychopathic death cult that might need to be nuked to save the human race." According to Breitbart's transcript of the monologue, Maher noted: "No one blinks."

He called out Tucker Carlson for platforming Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes and "wondering along with them who really was the bad guy in World War II." Then he turned to The New York Times for featuring Hasan Piker — whom the Times labeled a "Progressive Mind" — who Maher says claimed "Zionists should be treated the same as Nazis, which I assume means hung at Nuremberg."

The 2028 Democratic Field Is Part of the Problem

Maher made a pointed observation about every Democrat currently positioning for a 2028 presidential run: they all want it known they don't take money from AIPAC.

According to Breitbart's transcript, Maher said that posture "gives permission to actual antisemites to say, 'See? We're right about Israel, that's dirty money from a dirty country.'"

Maher is arguing that the entire likely Democratic presidential field is, whether intentionally or not, validating the fringe.

Maher pushed back hard on the "Islamophobia is just as bad" argument using FBI statistics rather than rhetoric.

"And I'm certainly not saying do more of the other. I'm just saying these are the numbers, the facts, the reality."

He also noted the visible asymmetry: Jewish people in America and Europe now report hiding Stars of David out of fear of being attacked. Meanwhile, the keffiyeh — a symbol of Palestinian solidarity — can be worn "anywhere." His exact words, per Breitbart: "You can wear it to Fiddler on the Roof and you'll get applause."

"Jew hatred isn't just acceptable now. It's cool," he said. "It's the new Che Guevara t-shirt."

On Young Democrats and Fringe Politics

Maher cited students at Yale chanting "We will honor our martyrs" and described portions of the Democratic Party's youth base as people who "actually think Hamas is a liberation movement" and "chant for the Houthis," according to CBN News and Faithwire.

"Here is the dilemma for Democrats — their young people, their key constituency — not only don't like their own civilization; they like the wrong one," Maher said.

He addressed parents directly, calling for pushback against these ideas. "Liberals need to push back on the dumb ideas that come from their children."

He concluded: "You couldn't survive a week living in Intifadaville."

How Mainstream Media Covered It

CNN and MSNBC gave this monologue minimal primetime attention. A registered Democrat with a massive liberal audience was warning his party of political consequences — yet the major left-leaning networks largely bypassed it. Fox News covered it extensively, which meant the story faced dismissal in liberal circles as right-wing amplification.

James Carville — the Democratic strategist — has separately warned that the party's anti-Israel "loudmouths" could cost elections, according to Fox News. Maher and Carville are making similar arguments.
