Barcelona Captain Ronald Araujo Joins Liverpool on Season-Long Loan With £47M Buy Option

Liverpool has a centre-back problem. Ronald Araujo just became the answer, at least for one season.

The club confirmed Monday that it completed a season-long loan for the Barcelona captain, with an option to buy him permanently for around £47 million ($63 million), according to Sky Sports. Liverpool is not paying Barcelona a loan fee. Instead, the Reds will cover the entirety of Araujo's salary for the year, and the 27-year-old Uruguayan took a pay cut of his own to make the move happen, per Sky Sports and the Times of India.

Normally a club paying a player's full wages for a loan, with zero transfer fee upfront, signals urgency on the buyer's side and a willingness to offload on the seller's side. Both applied here.

Why Liverpool needed him

Arne Slot, Liverpool's manager, was staring down a genuinely thin defensive roster heading into the 2026-27 season. Ibrahima Konate left for Real Madrid on a free transfer when his contract expired, according to the Guardian. Joe Gomez got hurt in Liverpool's first pre-season friendly. Giovanni Leoni is still working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury suffered on his debut last September. And Jeremy Jacquet, the roughly £50 million defender Liverpool signed from Rennes, hasn't made a single competitive appearance because of a shoulder injury, per the Guardian and Irish Times.

Slot summed up the situation bluntly last week: "With the injury of Joe we've been without senior centre-backs. But we have to be careful with Jeremy," he said, according to the Guardian.

Araujo fills that hole immediately. He can play centre-back or right-back, which matters given Conor Bradley is still rehabbing a serious knee injury and Jeremie Frimpong hasn't locked down a starting spot, per the Irish Times.

Why Barcelona let him go

Araujo was named one of Barcelona's captains in January and has made more than 213 appearances for the club since 2018, scoring 14 goals and winning eight trophies, according to FC Barcelona's official statement. He was La Liga Team of the Season in 2021-22 and 2023-24.

But he started only 11 league matches last season under manager Hansi Flick, per the Independent and Sky Sports. He also took an extended break from football in November 2025 to deal with what he later revealed was depression, according to Sky Sports. Barcelona, with a title-winning squad and its own depth at the back, was willing to loan out a captain who'd lost his place in the lineup.

Barcelona's own statement kept things short and gracious: "All the best Ronald!" the club wrote, confirming the loan runs through June 30, 2027.

What Araujo said

Araujo didn't hide his enthusiasm. "It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. It was a move that was necessary for me to take," he told Liverpool's official website, a quote echoed across the Times of India, Sky Sports and the Irish Times. "As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. I'm super happy to be here and excited to get started."

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's captain, offered a simple welcome: "Any player that arrives at the club we will be welcoming," he said, according to the Irish Times.

What comes next

Araujo is not Liverpool's top priority this summer. That remains a winger to replace Mohamed Salah, who left the club, according to the Independent. Liverpool has been talking to Paris Saint-Germain about Bradley Barcola, but the two clubs are far apart on price. The Independent reported PSG wants more than £100 million; the Guardian put the figure closer to £145 million.

Liverpool also looked at Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa but balked at a £60 million valuation, and Arsenal already had an approach for Konsa rejected, per the Guardian.

Van Dijk, for his part, played down expectations about further defensive moves and pointed instead toward the attacking business still to be done. "Let's see what the next couple of weeks are going to bring," he said, according to the Irish Times. "Any quality we can add to the team will definitely be welcome so let's see."

The Premier League transfer window closes September 1. Whether Liverpool lands Barcola, or anyone else at that position, will do more to define Slot's first full season than the Araujo loan ever will. For now, Liverpool has patched its centre-back crisis without spending a transfer fee, and Barcelona has trimmed a big contract off its books while keeping a buyback-style option alive if Araujo rediscovers his form in England.
