Apple Puts Its First 2-Nanometer Chip in a $899 Mac Mini, Ships Its Priciest Mac Studio Yet

Apple announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, built around two new chips: the M6 and the M5 Ultra. Both machines are available for pre-order now and ship September 22, according to Apple's press release and confirmed by CNBC, MacRumors, and Tom's Hardware.

The headline feature is the M6, Apple's first chip built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., according to Wired. It's a 12-core CPU, up from 10 cores on the M5, split into two "super cores," four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, MacRumors reported. Apple's Sri Santhanam, the company's vice president of Silicon Engineering Group, called it "the next giant leap in performance and AI compute for Apple silicon" in the company's own press release.

Apple explicitly built this generation for people running AI locally instead of in the cloud. CNBC reported that developers using AI agent software like OpenClaw increasingly prefer running it on a dedicated Mac mini rather than paying for cloud compute, and that AI researchers favor the Mac Studio for training and deploying local models. Apple's hardware chief Johny Srouji, quoted by the New York Post, described the mini as useful "whether it's being used as a home computer, powering a professional studio, or as an always-on agentic device."

The M6's Dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles peak AI compute over the prior generation, Apple said. Tom's Hardware reported the two neural engines can either run one model faster together or split into two independent models. Apple claims the M6 mini processes AI tasks up to four times faster than the outgoing M4 model.

The M5 Ultra: Apple's First Quad-Die Chip

The Mac Studio gets the more dramatic upgrade. The new M5 Ultra uses what Apple calls a quad-die architecture, fusing four chip dies together for the first time in an Apple silicon product, according to Wired and Apple's own release. Previous Ultra chips fused two Max dies; this time each of those Max dies was already a dual-die part, so four dies link up via an upgraded UltraFusion interconnect running at over 4.4 terabytes per second.

The result, per Tom's Hardware, is a chip with up to 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, and 1.2 terabytes per second of unified memory bandwidth, which Apple says is 50% more than the outgoing M3 Ultra. Apple says multiple Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips can link together to pool memory and run trillion-parameter AI models, a capability aimed squarely at AI labs and enterprise developers rather than typical consumers.

Prices Are Up, Again

The Mac mini now starts at $899, a $100 increase from its most recent $799 price and a $300 jump from the $599 starting price it carried as recently as this past spring, according to MacRumors and Engadget. Forbes noted the Mac mini with an M4 chip cost $799 as of this summer before the increase.

Apple raised prices on some Mac and iPad models back in June, and multiple outlets, including CNBC and Engadget, tie this latest hike to the same cause: rising memory chip prices driven by AI data center demand. Engadget's David Phelan-style framing calls it an "AI RAMaggedon" and specifically flags that the base M6 configuration still ships with just 256GB of storage, calling that stingy at the new price point.

The Mac Studio's entry price with the M5 Max chip holds steady at $2,499, the same as its predecessor, according to CNBC. But the M5 Ultra configuration starts at $5,499, up from at least $5,299 for the previous M3 Ultra model, CNBC reported.

There's a reasonable case that Apple is simply passing through real input costs. Memory chip prices have climbed industry-wide due to AI data center demand, not a decision unique to Apple, and the company applied similar increases across its lineup back in June. Consumers frustrated by the price jump aren't wrong that a $300 increase in a matter of months is steep, but the increase tracks a documented, industry-wide supply constraint rather than an arbitrary Apple markup.

Timing and Leadership Context

The New York Post frames this launch as likely the last major product unveiling of Tim Cook's tenure as CEO, tying it to Apple's leadership transition to hardware veteran John Ternus. The other sources reviewed do not independently confirm a firm departure date for Cook, so that framing should be read as the Post's characterization rather than an established fact from Apple itself.

The launch caught even close Apple watchers off guard. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had predicted an upgraded Mac mini was coming, per Forbes, but reportedly made no mention of the Mac Studio or M5 Ultra ahead of the announcement.

The bigger unresolved question is supply. Wired reported that both the Mac mini and Mac Studio have been hard to buy for much of 2026 due to component shortages, and Tom's Hardware noted Apple capped Mac mini memory at 32GB specifically because of that shortage. Whether the new models restore steady availability once they ship on September 22, or whether AI-driven chip demand keeps squeezing supply into the fall, remains to be seen.
