2026 World Cup Quarterfinals Set: Eight Teams, Four Matches Starting Thursday

Since the tournament opened with 48 teams six weeks ago, the field has been cut to eight. The quarterfinal schedule, confirmed by Al Jazeera and Fox 29, is as follows: France vs. Morocco on Thursday, July 9 at Boston Stadium; Spain vs. Belgium on Friday, July 10 at Los Angeles Stadium; Norway vs. England on Saturday, July 11 at Miami Stadium; and Argentina vs. Switzerland on Saturday, July 11 at Kansas City Stadium.

Egypt's Corruption Allegation Against Referee Letexier

The most charged development coming out of the round of 16 is Egypt's formal complaint to FIFA against French referee François Letexier and his entire crew.

According to BBC Sport, the Egyptian Football Association filed the complaint through EFA president Hany Abou Rida, demanding an investigation into what the federation called "blatant errors and double standards" in Argentina's 3-2 win in Atlanta. Two specific calls are at the center of the complaint.

First, VAR disallowed an Egypt goal when midfielder Marwan Attia was penalized for stepping on Lisandro Martínez's foot at the start of the move. Egypt argues this call was applied inconsistently. Egypt's manager Hossam Hassan said his team was "treated unfairly" and "suffered injustice." Egyptian striker Mostafa Zico went further, saying the referee "was really unfair" and that "this tournament has been fixed."

The EFA wants Letexier and his crew removed from the tournament and alleges "the crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team."

VAR was introduced specifically to correct obvious errors. If the technology reviewed one borderline call but not another in the same match, that inconsistency is a legitimate officiating question. Zico's goal being ruled out on what sounds like a marginal foul while a potential foul on Salah went unreviewed suggests the kind of asymmetric enforcement that erodes trust in the process.

FIFA has not announced any investigation as of July 8, 2026, and no ruling on the complaint has been issued. Egypt has never reached a World Cup quarterfinal, which makes the loss hurt more but does not itself establish that the officiating was corrupt. BBC Sport reported it contacted FIFA for comment but received no response. Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who set up Argentina's first goal and scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute, has not publicly addressed the allegations.

The open question: if FIFA does investigate the Egypt complaint and finds merit in the VAR inconsistency claims, what remedy exists at this stage of the tournament?
