ICE's Fort Myers Sweep: 500 Arrested Since Aug. 24, Including Suspects in a Home-Invasion Murder

Since ICE announced results on Sept. 9 of a Fort Myers-area operation that ran Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, the details of who exactly got swept up have kept trickling out. The headline number is 500 arrests. The harder question is how many of those arrests involve violent criminals versus people whose only offense is being in the country without legal status.

ICE says it partnered with the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Florida National Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The agency describes the arrestees as including people with final removal orders, repeat immigration violators, and people with criminal histories spanning domestic violence, drug offenses, DUI and assault, according to ICE's own statement.

The most serious case involves Whycliff Longin, 28, a Haitian national who had been seeking asylum in the U.S. The Lee County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a 911 call just before 3 a.m. on Aug. 27 from a woman who had escaped an attack, been strangled, and barricaded herself in a bedroom. Deputies found Longin fleeing a neighboring home and arrested him. Inside that home, they found a second woman dead with what the sheriff's office described as obvious signs of blunt force trauma. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.

Longin faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, sexual battery and burglary with battery. He is being held without bond in the Lee County Jail with an ICE detainer attached. These are charges, not a conviction, and no trial date has been announced. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said his "prayers are with the family of the woman who tragically lost her life, and with the survivor who showed incredible strength in fighting to live."

Other named cases include a suspected Mexican cartel member and a Honduran man accused of molesting two children, both arrested jointly by ICE and the Florida Highway Patrol, per ICE's statement. Guatemalan national Noe Lux Castro, 24, is accused of grabbing a trooper's Taser during a struggle and trying to use it against him. He faces charges of obstructing and resisting an officer.

Beyond those named individuals, ICE's public statement lists categories of alleged conduct across the full group, including battery, DUI, hit-and-run, domestic violence, drug possession, driving without a license, resisting arrest and repeated illegal reentry after deportation. ICE has not published a full breakdown showing how many of the 500 fall into each category, a gap flagged by the outlet When in Your State. That outlet also noted that ICE called the operation "weeklong" even though the enforcement dates cover four calendar days, and that the agency waited nearly two weeks after the arrests to announce results publicly.

The operation runs through 287(g), the federal program that deputizes state and local officers for immigration enforcement. ICE says Florida now has more 287(g) deputizations than any other state, with all 67 county sheriffs participating. ERO Miami interim Field Office Director Matthew Elliston called the partnerships "an indispensable force multiplier." Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state has built "the most proactive and effective state in identifying, apprehending and deporting illegal immigrants."

When in Your State also placed the Fort Myers numbers inside a bigger picture. The governor's office said in May that coordinated federal-state operations had produced nearly 25,000 arrests statewide since Florida's enforcement push began, including more than 1,100 arrests in the first week of the state's Operation Tidal Wave.

Newsdesk International pointed out that Southwest Florida's economy runs heavily on agriculture, construction and hospitality, sectors that lean on immigrant labor. Harvest-season enforcement surges create workforce disruption. That outlet also tied the enforcement wave to a separate Department of Transportation crackdown that has revoked more than 30,000 improperly issued commercial driver's licenses this year and closed the non-domiciled CDL pathway affecting roughly 200,000 credential holders, plus a Border Patrol operation in Arizona that arrested 95 truck drivers holding California-issued CDLs. Whether that CDL crackdown is connected to the same 287(g) push or a separate DOT policy track, the labor and freight disruption is real and worth watching independent of how one feels about the immigration enforcement itself.

Longin's case now heads toward a Lee County courtroom, where prosecutors will have to prove the murder and sexual battery charges. No trial date has been set. Whether ICE will ever release a full criminal-history breakdown for the remaining 496 people arrested in the operation remains an open question.
