HYPE trades about 11% below its September record as Hyperliquid reports a $14.58M USDC yield payment

HYPE trades about 11% below its September record as Hyperliquid reports a $14.58M USDC yield payment
Hyperliquid's HYPE token was near $87 on Oct. 8, about 11% under its Sept. 23 high of roughly $98, even as the protocol disclosed a new USDC-yield revenue stream for buybacks. The buyback machine is real and well funded, but a roughly 3.75 million-token unlock and a large unissued supply leave the price question open.

Hyperliquid's token is sitting below its peak while the protocol's revenue keeps growing. HYPE traded near $86.90 on Oct. 8, down about 3.5% over 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap data. That is roughly 11% under the all-time high near $97.96 set on Sept. 23.

The market capitalization stood at about $22.1 billion, with daily volume near $767 million. Ranked by market cap, HYPE sits around ninth among crypto assets.

A new revenue stream for buybacks

On Monday, Oct. 5, Hyperliquid said it received its first $14.58 million USDC payment under its Aligned Quote Asset v2 framework, known as AQAv2. The framework sends about 90% of cost-adjusted yield on USDC reserves to the protocol's Assistance Fund, which uses the money to buy HYPE on the open market.

The payment covers roughly 30 days. Yield began accruing after AQAv2 was activated in late August.

Until now, buybacks relied primarily on trading fees. The USDC yield does not depend on trading activity. Users bridge USDC into HyperEVM, Circle provides the USDC issuance infrastructure, and Coinbase acts as treasury deployer, with a share of the resulting yield flowing back to Hyperliquid.

One caveat: the payment is funding, not buying. It does not mean the Assistance Fund has already bought that amount of HYPE. Purchases happen separately.

The revenue numbers

According to figures posted by the analyst account @WuBlockchain, Hyperliquid has passed $1.4 billion in cumulative revenue, with more than $1.26 billion directed to open-market HYPE buybacks. That is a single-source tally.

If the number holds, roughly 90% of everything the protocol has earned has gone back into buying its own token. Few crypto projects, and few public companies, run a payout that lopsided.

Options push on Hyperliquid's rails

Hyperliquid already runs the largest decentralized market for perpetual futures. Now other builders are adding products on top of it.

Hypercall, an options platform on Hyperliquid, traded $536 million in options in September, according to founder Jake Sylvestre. That is nearly all of the $592 million it has traded since launching June 1. The figure is notional contract value, which typically exceeds the cash collateral traders actually post.

The parent company of Kraken also plans to offer perpetual contracts like these to U.S. traders.

Why the price is sliding

No one has established a single cause for the pullback. The timing is what the record shows. HYPE hit its high on Sept. 23, one day before Binance opened HYPE/USDT, HYPE/USDC and HYPE/TRY spot markets on Sept. 24 at 11:00 UTC with a Seed tag. The token slipped that day and has spent most sessions since below $95.

Crypto Times described that pattern as familiar for listed tokens: a record into the announcement, then heavier two-way trading once a deeper order book exists. It added that this does not by itself signal any change in protocol revenue.

The skeptical read comes from the same analysis. Crypto Times noted that tying token demand to trader activity through buybacks offers no price floor, and that the large unissued supply keeps future inflation risk in play.

The supply math backs that up. CoinMarketCap lists circulating supply at about 254.3 million HYPE against a maximum of roughly 951 million, which puts the fully diluted valuation near $82.6 billion. Other trackers publish lower circulating counts and market caps closer to $19 billion for a similar price. That is a difference in counting, not a second price.

The unlock

About 3.75 million HYPE moved through an unlock tied to previously restricted allocations. At around $90 per token, that is about $337.5 million, which is where the "$340 million" headline number comes from.

Unlocked tokens are not sold tokens. Holders can keep, transfer, stake or negotiate over-the-counter deals instead of dumping on exchanges. The Bitcoin Foundation's analysis of the event argued that recurring revenue and active buybacks give the market demand to absorb the extra supply, while acknowledging that dilution is not eliminated and that the outcome depends on what holders actually do.

The ownership structure matters here too. A concentrated contributor allocation can produce larger individual transactions than a broad retail airdrop.

What to watch

HYPE sits well above its November 2024 low near $3.81, and 30-day performance has been modestly positive. But the last two weeks have been a giveback from the September peak, not a new advance.

The next test is whether the Assistance Fund's buying, now backed by both trading fees and USDC yield, outruns supply coming off schedule from a pool with a large unissued component. The first AQAv2 payment covered about 30 days. The size of the next one will show whether that stream holds at the same level.
