FAA Locks In September 22 for SpaceX's First Attempt to Put Starship in Orbit

Since Flight 13 splashed down safely in the Pacific on July 24, SpaceX has spent nearly two months prepping Ship 41 and Booster 21 for the next step: actual orbit. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed Monday that September 22 is the primary launch date for Flight 14, with September 23 as backup, according to an updated FAA operations plan cited by CGTN and Xinhua. SpaceX itself announced the date Tuesday.

This is the moment SpaceX has been building toward since Starship debuted in April 2023. All 13 prior flights were suborbital by design. Flight 14 will try to put the fully integrated vehicle into a stable low Earth orbit for the first time, according to SpaceX's own mission description reported by Space.com.

The Mission Profile

Liftoff is set for a 75-minute window opening at 7:15 a.m. Central Time (8:15 a.m. EDT, 12:15 UTC) from Starbase in South Texas, according to Space.com. If the flight goes to plan, Ship will climb to roughly 275 kilometers, complete six orbits, and spend close to 10 hours in space before a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile, per SpaceX's own figures cited by Space.com and Longbridge.

The booster and ship involved, Booster 21 and Ship 41, are both third-generation V3 hardware. India Today and Newsbytes App reported the ground-test campaign behind them. Ship 41 fired a single Raptor engine on August 19 to simulate a deorbit burn, then fired all six engines together for a 60-second static fire two days later. Booster 21 followed on August 28 with a full-duration static fire of all 33 engines at Starbase.

Why This Flight Actually Matters for the Balance Sheet

Unlike every previous test, Flight 14 carries a real commercial payload: 26 Starlink V3 satellites, each adding 1 terabit per second of capacity to the network, according to Longbridge. SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen said the vehicle is "core to the rest of our business" and called the mission the company's first revenue-generating Starship flight, per Longbridge's reporting.

SpaceX now trades publicly under the ticker SPCX after completing what TechCrunch and Crypto Briefing both describe as the largest IPO in history back in June. Longbridge reported SpaceX shares fell more than 2% in Tuesday trading, a reminder that Wall Street is now grading these test flights in real time, not just space nerds on Twitter.

Pivotal Research Group analyst Jeffrey Wlodarczak told clients, according to Longbridge, that whether an investment in SpaceX pays off rests almost entirely on the company achieving full Starship reusability. SpaceX has sunk at least $15 billion into Starship development and committed at least $100 billion more to a dedicated Louisiana spaceport, per Longbridge. Investors are betting that bill gets paid back through Starlink capacity and eventually crewed missions, not government contracts alone.

What's Not Happening This Time

SpaceX will not attempt to catch either vehicle on this flight. TechCrunch reported that Elon Musk walked back earlier suggestions the company might try catching the Starship upper stage with the launch tower, saying an explosion at this stage would be too costly a setback. The Super Heavy booster catch is off the table too, after the booster struggled to properly relight its engines following stage separation on Flight 13. SpaceX told TechCrunch it made another round of hardware and software changes to the booster to address that failure.

SpaceX also made changes to Starship's heat shield based on data pulled from the Flight 13 vehicle, which SpaceX recovered intact and towed back to Texas after a soft splashdown, according to TechCrunch. Three of the Starlink satellites launching on Flight 14 carry cameras specifically to photograph that heat shield after deployment, Space.com reported.

SpaceX has now pushed six of the last seven Super Heavy booster attempts through modification after modification without a clean relight, and reusability is the entire financial thesis Wlodarczak flagged to clients. This poses a legitimate engineering and investor risk.

NASA has its own stake in the outcome. A modified Starship is the lunar lander for the Artemis program, Newsbytes App noted, meaning a failed or partial orbital attempt would ripple beyond SpaceX's balance sheet into the government's own moon timeline. The FAA still has to sign off on final launch approval before September 22 arrives, and Crypto Briefing noted SpaceX also needs FCC clearance for the satellites' orbital operations. Both agencies' final go/no-go decisions in the coming days are the next concrete checkpoint.
