Crusoe Raises $3.9 Billion, Valuation Hits $30.9 Billion for AI Data Center Builder

Crusoe Raises $3.9 Billion, Valuation Hits $30.9 Billion for AI Data Center Builder
Denver-based Crusoe closed a $3.9 billion Series F on Thursday, pushing its valuation to $30.9 billion, with Nvidia among more than two dozen investors. The company claims $140 billion in contracted deals but has only 1 of its 6-plus contracted gigawatts actually up and running, a gap worth watching as AI infrastructure spending keeps breaking records.

Crusoe closed a $3.9 billion Series F funding round on Thursday, September 17, taking its valuation to $30.9 billion, according to the company's own announcement carried by GlobeNewswire. The round was co-led by Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners.

More than two dozen other investors piled in, including Nvidia, Founders Fund, GIC, the Qatar Investment Authority, Radical Ventures, TPG, Fidelity, Tiger Global, T. Rowe Price, ARK Invest, Salesforce Ventures, and Robinhood Ventures Fund I, per the company's statement and reporting from SiliconANGLE. That's roughly ten months after Crusoe raised $1.38 billion at a $10 billion valuation last October, according to TechCrunch, meaning the company's valuation has tripled in less than a year.

Crusoe also added three new board members: Cloudflare CFO Thomas Seifert, Primary Digital Infrastructure partner Bill Stein, and Redwood Materials CEO JB Straubel, who also sits on Tesla's board, TechCrunch reported. Straubel isn't new to Crusoe. He personally invested in the company back in 2021, and Crusoe later became the first customer of Redwood's energy storage business.

What Crusoe actually does

Crusoe started in 2018 as a crypto mining operation running on flared natural gas that would otherwise be burned off at oil sites, according to Vested Finance and KuCoin. It pivoted to AI infrastructure as GPU demand exploded, and now calls itself the industry's first "vertically-integrated" AI infrastructure provider, per its own statement.

That means Crusoe doesn't just lease data center floor space. It builds its own power plants, manufactures its own electrical components and enclosures, and runs an AI cloud platform called Crusoe Cloud, according to SiliconANGLE. CEO Chase Lochmiller said in the company's statement that controlling everything "from electrons to tokens" is the point, and Atreides CIO Gavin Baker said in the same release that vertical integration gives Crusoe "a structural advantage that compounds as they build."

The flagship project is a 1.2-gigawatt campus in Abilene, Texas, that Oracle uses to host OpenAI workloads, SiliconANGLE reported. Crusoe is also building a 900-megawatt site for Microsoft nearby and, per the Wall Street Journal as cited by SiliconANGLE, a campus for Google in Texas as well.

Beyond the giant campuses, Crusoe is pushing modular units called Spark: prefabricated, truck-transportable data centers with built-in satellite connectivity that can be dropped near stranded power sources without years of construction, according to Unite.ai and Vested Finance.

The numbers behind the pitch

Crusoe says it has more than $140 billion in total contracted value across its platform and more than 6 gigawatts of gross contracted data center capacity, according to its own statement. Only 1 gigawatt of that is actually delivered and operational, the company disclosed.

Crusoe Cloud's annualized revenue is up more than 20-fold over the past year, SiliconANGLE reported, driven partly by a service called Managed Inference, which the company says crossed $100 million in annualized recurring revenue within a year of launch. Crusoe also signed a five-year, $13 billion cloud contract with trading firm Jane Street, Bloomberg reported, as noted by TechCrunch.

TechCrunch also reported that Crusoe met with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley last month about a potential IPO, first flagged by Axios. No filing has been made and no timeline has been set.

The obvious question nobody in these announcements answers

Nvidia is both an investor in Crusoe and, presumably, a major supplier of the GPUs that fill Crusoe's data centers. Nvidia has taken stakes in several AI infrastructure players building out capacity for its own chips. None of the sources here disclose the terms of Nvidia's investment or whether it's tied to chip purchase commitments, so the extent of that circularity is unclear.

Skeptics of the AI infrastructure buildout have a fair point when they note that a $30.9 billion valuation and $140 billion in "contracted value" are promises, not delivered product. Crusoe's own numbers show just 1 of its 6-plus contracted gigawatts is actually running. That's a real execution gap, not proof of fraud or failure, but it's the kind of gap that matters if power delivery, permitting, or construction labor slips. Techmanly flagged this risk directly, citing long-lead equipment and volatile power markets as genuine hazards facing every developer in this space.

Crusoe's counter is straightforward: it doesn't wait on outside utilities. The company originates its own power generation, which it says is the reason it can move faster than rivals stuck waiting years for grid interconnection approval. Whether that claim holds up depends on whether Crusoe can convert its remaining 5 gigawatts of contracted capacity into operating megawatts, and how fast it does it will likely shape whether Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley end up taking this company public anytime soon.
