Clacton By-Election Ballot Hits 90 Centimeters, 34 Candidates, Zero Major Parties

Nigel Farage quit as MP for Clacton on July 7 after mounting scrutiny of his finances and a parliamentary investigation, according to the BBC. He's standing again in the by-election he triggered, set for Thursday, August 13. What he's facing on the ballot paper is unlike anything British voters have seen.

Tendring District Council confirmed 34 candidates will contest the seat, smashing the previous record of 26 set in the 2008 Haltemprice and Howden by-election, according to Ground News. That contest happened after David Davis resigned to protest civil liberties issues, according to Paul Whiteley, professor of government at the University of Essex. Before that, the record was 19 candidates, set in the 1993 Newbury by-election.

The result is a ballot paper roughly 90 centimeters, about 3 feet, long, according to the BBC. Unfolded, it's longer than most adults' arms.

Logistics Nightmare for Election Staff

Ian Davidson, Tendring District Council's chief executive and acting returning officer for the by-election, told the BBC organizing the vote has been "manic." His staff had to rethink basic mechanics most people never think about: how do you fold a 3-foot ballot to fit an envelope? How do you count it when it's longer than the tables you're counting on?

"We've logistically been looking at the size of the ballot paper, how we fold it to get it into the envelope so we can send it out to our postal voters and how we manage the polling stations," Davidson said.

His solution involved double tables at polling stations and sorting ballots into batches before verification and counting can even start, according to the BBC.

The council said printing costs for this ballot are running four times higher than a standard ballot paper, the BBC reported. No total dollar or pound figure was given by the council in available reporting.

Nearly 80,000 Voters, 51 Polling Stations

Around 80,000 electors across the Essex constituency are eligible to vote at 51 polling stations, according to Ground News. Davidson urged residents to register by July 28 and to bring valid photo ID to vote in person, standard requirements under UK voter ID law. Postal ballot applications were due July 29, and anyone needing a proxy vote or a Voter Authority Certificate in place of photo ID have until August 5 to apply.

Postal votes have already started coming back to town hall, according to the BBC, ahead of the August 13 date.

Farage's Framing, and the Boycott

Farage has cast the contest as "people versus the establishment," according to Ground News. Labour, the Conservatives, and other major Westminster parties chose not to field a candidate against him. Farage won Clacton in the 2024 general election with 46% of the vote, according to Euronews.

That boycott is the reason the ballot ballooned. With no major-party opposition, the field filled with independents and minor party figures, including 20 independents, itself a record for a single UK election, according to the BBC. High-profile names on the list include Laurence Fox and the perennial joke candidate Count Binface, according to Ground News. The BBC published a full list of all 34 candidates on its website.

Critics quoted by Ground News describe Farage's resignation and re-run as a political stunt, a fair characterization given he triggered the vote himself rather than being forced out by any recall process. Farage's own position is that he wanted voters to weigh in directly on the financial scrutiny he faced. He chose the timing and framing of this contest while also submitting himself to a vote he didn't have to call.

Coverage of the record field has varied. Euronews described the situation as a straightforward record-breaker, while some outlets aggregated by Ground News called it a "farce" and a "mega-farce." The underlying facts remain the same regardless of framing: a record field, a boycotting political establishment, and a 3-foot ballot that Tendring District Council's own election staff say is more expensive and harder to manage than anything they've run before.

With no major party challenger, whether nearly 80,000 registered voters show up to sort through 34 names, or whether many stay home given Farage's clear advantage, remains to be seen when polls close on August 13.
