Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Promoted Transgender Violence Emergency on the Same Weekend 39 People Were Shot and Six Killed

Since Chicago's gun violence numbers became a persistent national flashpoint, the city has cycled through rounds of mayoral messaging that critics say sidesteps the neighborhoods bearing the brunt of the bloodshed. This weekend added a new chapter.

On Sunday, June 22, Mayor Brandon Johnson's official X account posted a statement touting the city's 'Transfemicide State of Emergency,' according to Fox News and KOTA Radio, both citing the post directly. The declaration was originally issued in 2024 and was renewed this weekend. Johnson's post read, in part: 'Since declaring a Transfemicide State of Emergency, our administration has strengthened the City's capacity to support LGBTQ+ Chicagoans.'

The post went up while Chicago was still counting the wounded from a Juneteenth weekend that produced 39 shooting victims and six deaths, according to both sources.

What the City's Own Report Does and Doesn't Say

'Transfemicide' is defined as the targeted killing of a transgender woman motivated by transphobic and misogynistic hatred. The city report underlying the declaration does not state a specific count of transgender women killed in Chicago. It also, by its own admission, folds suicides into the 'transfemicide' category despite the term's definition excluding self-inflicted deaths. An image in the report features photos of 21 people, presumably transgender women who have died in the city, but the document provides no statistical breakdown.

A state of emergency carries legal and budgetary weight. Declaring one without citing a documented, verified death count makes it nearly impossible for the public to evaluate whether the scale of resources being directed at the problem is proportionate.

The Strongest Defense of Johnson's Position

The strongest argument for Johnson's approach is that violence against Black transgender women is a genuine documented pattern nationally, that it often goes underreported, and that city governments are capable of working multiple public-safety priorities simultaneously. Transgender women, and particularly Black transgender women, do face disproportionate rates of violent victimization according to national advocacy data. A city administration arguing that a dedicated framework is needed for a population that falls through reporting cracks is not an unreasonable position.

The response online was swift and bipartisan in tone, if not in source. Representative Brandon Gill, R-Texas, posted on X: 'Nobody knows what a "Transfemicide State of Emergency" is. This is what the Mayor of Chicago is focused on.' Conservative commentator Matt Walsh called it 'beyond parody.' Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair posted: '"Transfemicide State of Emergency." We are running out of sentences.'

One X user wrote, according to KOTA Radio: 'Black Chicagoans are dying in the streets by the dozens every month in gang violence, drive-bys, and retaliation. That's the emergency crushing families in Roseland, Englewood, Austin, and beyond.'

X personality Jarvis Best offered: 'Everyone is dunking on this but I think it's NICE that Mayor Johnson finally found a type of murder he doesn't like. Baby steps.'

Trump and Pritzker

President Donald Trump weighed in on Saturday, before Johnson's post, targeting Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker rather than the mayor directly. 'Lots of Killing going on in Chicago,' Trump wrote on Truth Social, according to both sources. 'Why isn't Governor Pritzker calling me for help.' Trump offered federal assistance to address the violence.

Pritzker has not requested federal intervention. The Community Roundtable director Cata Truss told Fox News she strongly urges both Johnson and Pritzker to accept federal help.
